The papercraft-style visuals are the real treat. [Issue#227, p.77]
Derrick the Deathfin is an easy recommendation for anyone who likes their platformers with a unique flare. Its self-referential humor and topical environmental humor are more than enough to give it a personality that you won't find outside Banjo-Kazooie.

The simplistic mechanics don't offer that remarkable of a hook, and the game spans just a couple of hours. As a light snack between big holiday releases, however, it's a pleasantly tasty distraction. [Holiday 2012, p.73[

A broken game because of the time limits. It would have been wonderful to just be able to swim in this world and eat and watch at a beautiful sea. Sadly, you don't have time for that because you have to eat and eat and eat.

Derrick is a paper shark on a rampage against a meat factory that chopped up his parents into shark fins. The game sports four continents, some eight-nine stages each, ranging from puzzles to speed-tracks. It plays quite similar to Sonic the Hedgehog, but with the added difficulty of being weightless under water. While being hilariously funny, it also becomes quite a challenge later on, when getting through the tracks becomes a delicate balance between gathering foods, jumping tyre tracks in the sky (yes, really!), collecting diamonds, and trying to find the exit. It can be frustrating at times, but finally finishing a track is very rewarding!

Derrick the Deathfin is a beautiful very fresh looking title. Underwater paper craft is a unique art style that has never been done in games before. The characters look fantastically groovy almost stoned. Looks super funky and plays nice. Everyone should play Derrick!

This is like a visit to your favorite burger joint: Once you start, it is hard to stop. But unfortunately the shark rampage doesn't last too long, leaving you hungry for more.

Here, I'll make it simple. If you can answer yes to at least one of the following: Do you like fun games? Do you like beautifully, hand-crafted games? Do you have a sense of humor? Did you ever own a SNES? Did you ever own a Genesis (or Mega Drive of course)? Do you enjoy finely-tuned fluid character controls? Then buy this game. You won't regret it.

The game can be incredibly frustrating but this pays off with a huge sense of achievement when you finally nail a level.

Derrick the Deathfin's stylish adventure through the ocean is packed full of charm, if not a lot of content.

Derrick the Deathfin is a real heartbreaker. It's agonisingly obvious that Different Tuna tried really hard to make something special, and as a player you're rooting for them – but the base gameplay just isn't good enough to keep you hooked. If the graphics grab you, then the price is low enough to make this a worthwhile gamble, just don't dive in with any unrealistic expectations.

Derrick the Deathfin is one of the freshest, most imaginative, fun & vibrant gaming experiences I have ever had. And I'm not just saying that because I'm the developer who made it. Oh actually I am.
