Batbarian: Testament of the Primordials
Batbarian: Testament of the Primordials is a very solid Metroidvania game. While the story isn't anything special, the humor in the writing is good enough to keep you paying attention to the cut scenes. The level design is well done, and it complements the bat powers. The combat is good enough, even if the leveling system may not be to everyone's liking, and the various gameplay tweaks mean that there's a good chance players can tackle this from beginning to end. For genre fans, Batbarian is worth checking out.
Overall, Batbarian: Testament of the Primordials is a simple game, but a very good one. I heartily recommend it to anyone who’s willing to put up with a bit of trial-and-error.
Superb and inventive puzles and general charm balances the poor combat and lacklustre art, resulting in a remarkable indie game.

It starts off strong, charming and mysterious with a well written setup, full of personality. The problem is, it’s way too long, repetitive and samey. The map design could’ve been streamlined, and the gameplay could’ve used more variety. It’s very puzzle heavy, and while some will adore it, I found it to be a bit on the tedious side. There needed to be better signposting vis a vis where to go next; all metroidvanias have that problem, but at some point it just got a bit too overwhelming: all my exits are blocked, do I go up, down, or around and around in circles? I did get a good 7 hours out of it, but a lot of that was being lost, and maybe 20% was dying to the three headed boss: holding down charge strike, while throwing a cherry at the boss and timing the blow so you land a hit, but don’t get hit, was when I started to not want to keep playing. It does feel like a chore, even if I did enjoy the atmosphere and storytelling. The game needed a bit more focus, and would’ve benefited from more distinct areas. I think of something like Chasm, which takes place in a…chasm, but had tons of variety in both enemy design as well as environment, great combat and loads of replay value. I doubt most will want to go back to this dungeon for another round, bat or no bat. Overall, loved the music, didn’t care for the graphics, or the gameplay loop. Great metroidvanias are an art form, and while Batbarian certainly makes a strong first impression, it couldn’t hold my attention beyond the 7 hour mark, once I realized the game wasn’t going to get any better. Hopefully round two from this no doubt talented developer will be a stronger showing.

I am so deeply in love with Batbarian. Not because it’s a brilliant Metroid-ish platform game, which it is. Not because it has excellent art and animations, which it does. But because it’s a game that wants to be played.

PC Invasion
A wonderfully crafted Metroidvania that should have genre fans plenty excited. It's blending of combat, platforming, and puzzling keeps the gameplay fresh and varied throughout its entire 20-hour story. It may not be the most revolutionary game ever made, but it does what it set out to do very well.

Despite my problems with the combat and supreme frustration at failing to find the true ending, I remain impressed by Batbarian. The characters are winning, the puzzles are brilliantly constructed, and it looks fantastic. While I can wish that the developers had done a little more to make the secrets a little more accessible, I can’t criticize their craftsmanship.

Ultimately, while Batbarian may not blow your mind, it’ll offer the odd chuckle, and mechanics just robust enough to keep you coming back.

Batbarian is a hilarious platformer and Metroidvania game, with tons of puzzles and secrets to find. This Indie is a must check out if you enjoy these genres. Music - It's full of rhythms I can vibe with, and if I go into the menu and idle for a bit, I don't tire of the music one bit. Art style and Graphics - Pixel art isn't my favorite art style by a long shot, but this is a unique style that is enjoyable. Fighting/Combat - Not too difficult, but not too easy either. You may think you have everything down, but then you find a new trick to make an enemy or boss easier. Story - This game is not for the story, but rather the comedy and the references that keep you laughing. Replay-ability - I already have two save files, and I'm aiming for 100% completion. Overall - With how long I've been following this game and waiting for the release, it's most likely my GOTY. *heartu boop*

This game is awesome. If you like games that take lots of the best parts of classics, while also adding new ideas to keep it fresh, look no further. Despite being very different in a lot of ways, I do get reminded of the Messenger by the game. That is about as high a praise as I can give an indie platformer nowadays.
