1971 Project Helios has an enjoyable plot to unravel, decent character development and challenging AI to defeat, but it's mired in murky and unclear visuals and repetitive gameplay. You're probably best off giving this one a miss.

1971 Project Helios is an ok tactical game with a satisfying gameplay loop, few new ideas, good aesthetics and some technical issues.

There are a lot of great strategy games on the PlayStation 4. Maybe, if that weren’t the case, it would be easier to forgive 1971 Project Helios being a bland adventure with largely forgettable characters engaging in claustrophobic encounters against enemies that all sort of blend together. I mean, it works well enough on the system. The loading screens are a little long for something so basic, but that isn’t an egregious offense. You can even see how sometimes it is trying to push people to be aggressive. Unfortunately, I found it completely unappealing in every way, which isn’t great when it was surrounded by better games every time I turned on my system.

Nothing special. The game had a lot of potential but it remained unused. Weak and often dumb plot, unbalanced skills and bugs. My game bugged out in final battle and I can't finish the game. If you really don't have anything good to play then you can give it a try, but if you do then just don't buy it. There are better games out there.

I regret getting this game at full price; but now that I have, let me share some thoughts. This is not a bad game; it has tons of potential. Thing is, it's not ready for release yet. The game is riddled with bugs and glitches; from game crashing bugs, to frozen commands, to items that can be duplicated at each reload etc. Just to give a recent example: after the last patch, the game now offers a "Dev Menu" in the options while the screen is filled with tech information - which should not be there. Also, it urges some quality of life improvements. Everything feels rushed and unpolished. Also, the difficulty right now is extremely unbalanced (and there is no option to change it). The enemy's 50% mean 80%, while the player's mean 30%. It can get very frustrating; reloading fights just to get better rng. All that being said, the setting is cool, so is the cast of characters. The idea of a frozen world where a bunch of people, who could actually be fighting themselves, need to save a scientist works for me. I love the art style, the mood, the soundtrack. It is a cool game, it´s just kind of broken right now. Hope the keep patching it and supporting it. I look forward to coming back to it. Right now, at least for me, it is unplayable.

While the gameplay is solid, we came away more impressed with the art direction and sound design than expected. The lightly stylised, cel-shaded look works for 1971, with the organic environments looking especially nice. The sheer variety of locations is impressive, too, including an oil rig, airbase, canyon, and nomadic village. Meanwhile, the exploration music is absolutely beautiful, though the combat soundtrack gets a bit repetitive.

With more and more proposals that invite us to be part of a deep and varied tactical and strategic experience, this title of Spanish origin manages to stand out for the linearity of a well-run and interesting story and a group of interesting protagonists who feel alive, with personality. However, he remains halfway in terms of his fights, too basic for those who are used to the genre and a very flat development.

Although some shortcomings are obvious, 1971: Project Helios is a good option for those looking for a turn-based strategy game, thanks to its design and setting.

I'm a huge fan of turn-based tactic games so I bought this in May immediately after it (mistakenly?) appeared in PS Store. A day later it was taken off and no longer available. God, I regret there is no refund policy at PS Store. This was quite expensive $40 so I expected a lot from this game. In short it's a joke. It's like you took a Switch game and ported it your TV screen without any changes. It's overly simplified, way too easy to play, no way to control the difficulty level. Even my cat would be able to play. Switch graphics. The worst part is actually the music ... when a battle begins the techno music is so unpleasant I had to turn off the sound in my TV. The game is so bad that I had to register to meta critic to write this review and warn you people.
