Soooo formulaic. There are some great chapters in this film that would shine in isolation like a 10 min YouTube clip. In its entirety, however, the plot seems like it was written in a hurry and without any second opinions. There are just too many examples of plot details that are logically one-in-a-million unlikely. The result is a movie that could have been—but is not— entertaining and satisfying.

Two hour lesson of greener grass. Very easy to watch but lacking in depth. Would be ok if it had been 60 minute episode of Ghosts.

I really enjoyed the first 30 minutes because it felt like an “easy watch” and unlike anything i had seen, so I was thinking that this film would live up to the stratospheric reviews. But then it had a series of disjointed, unpolished transitions, as if there were multiple 2-3 minute segments that had been accidentally deleted. The enjoyability was further weakened by an absence of any substantive character development. Also, when the story unfolded iwith 2-3 hugely important events, there was no rise in dramatic effect. Instead, the events just happened, like an ancient silent film with flat affect on the actors’ faces.
It wasn’t offensively bad at all but just seemed so…old and had an amateurish feel.

The overall feel—cinematic look—was similar to a lower budget production, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Pace and flow of plot: about a 3/10. Acting: 10/10– Plaza and male lead are fantastic. Writing: 4/10 — not bad but makes it quite forgettable bc there’s nothing that makes it unusual in any way.

Why, oh why, do movie critics have such a fetish for ridiculous, emotionally manipulative films? Is it Artistic? I guess. If the definition of art includes a requirement for shocking plot twists and/or an achingly sad script. “Oooooo…I didn’t see THAT coming” the smug movie critic mutters to the stranger sitting next to him. “So dark! So fancy! Definitely 5 stars!” And, yes, I get the symbolism, the civil war, the foreshadowing bc I remember it from high school English class, in which, by the way, a 15 year old student would get an “A” but with the comment, “you clearly poured your heart into this short story. You’re on your way to becoming a great writer. Realize, however, that you don’t have to include every literary device in each story. Pace yourself.”

Lower your expectations (bc of a “critics 91”) and it’s watchable. Yes, the acting is an A+ but there is an absence of even a single likeable character. That alone doesn’t make it a 2/10 but it doesn’t help. The audience only sees the development of 3 characters. All others are minor and quite forgettable. It could be enjoyable if there were any suspense, emotionality, romance, or tragedy. This film left me empty.

Victimized again by overly high expectations! If I try really hard to channel an inner film student who is seeing this in historical blahblah then maybe. But on its face, in 2022, it’s not entertaining at any substantive level.

How sad that the User Rating is low bc so many MAGA Sheeple have chosen to spend time 1) registering for acct and 2) lying about seeing a movie. Liars, just like their Dear Leader (>24K documented lies in 4 yrs). Living in reality, please note that, contrary to all the lying reviewers, the film covers Democrat incumbents getting primaried so there’s very negative content about D incumbents. Amazing that in 2020 a film about US politics can make you so emotional at the end, assuming you watch it in good faith (ie, not a grievance-spewing angry white male).
