incredibly rich milieu of gangsters, politicians and players, from a bygone age, animated by genius and imbued with vitality and immediacy once more. simply a time portal to another world. frankly, only the incredible and slightly unbelievable ending rescues this from the 7 iy condemned itself to, with the events of the lasts seasons ending. a bunch of old men talking politics, rescued by a sensational departure into narrative entertainment.

hilariously under rated for taking the piss out of its audience with gay cowboys and a hilariously poetic ending. Every season of the sopranos is getting a 10 from me, along with the wire? you ask me why? because i dont have an 11 button. along with the wire, one of the shows that completely revolutionised television. there are others that can be compared, even favourably, and there are forerunners and worthy successors, but these two shows pretty much dropped the bomb on tv. the sopranos is better than the wire for me, but its an apples and oranges thing. this show is endlessly fascinating, incredibly rich, and effortlessly reflective of america itself. the wire further deconstructed the episodic shackles of television, and the idiot drive to pacify an audience, but the sopranos owned the narrative perspective, and the cynical portrait of the larger world it is set in. we got to know the city of omars baltimore real well from watching the wire. but tonys america is the world we are living in.

simply the standard by which all other shows are judged. i have the sopranos slightly higher, but the wire holds quality quite well throughout and the quality is simply incredible. this is the story of a city told from the ground up. the first season is a dive into an immense world that just keeps getting deeper and deeper until you realise we are all part of the world beyond the wire and yet the city rolls on. this first season is judged on its own merits, easily a 10, and no amount of idiot middle class who love it because they were told to, despite never seeing the show, or counter counter culture descreditors are going to make me forget that. 1 is a ten based on its own merits. the series is a 10 based on its own merits. the weaker seasons are a 10 based on the fact they are that much better than anything else on tv, at what they do, with a very few key exceptions. a worthy end to the series. slight issues with the press story and some real butthurt in the plots callous disregard for audience satisfaction. goes out ganster style on its own merits, an incredible and almost peerless piece of work. 9.5 rounded up.

one of the best individual seasons of television, i think ive ever seen. its not a wire type show, its more of a dexter meets the killing type show. the backdrop is the city of london, and the realisation is incredible. the season starts pretty episodic, but rolls into an insane conclusion. this show has had some criticism with regards to plausibility and cliches, but the thing is a painting of depravity on a backdrop of londons neverending cultural lava lamp. its not so much about good v evil, as it is about the thirst to understand vs the need to kill whatever gets in your way. this season is mentally ill, deranged, poetic, and beautiful.

solid adaptation of a danish show. it uses the same red herring device of a murder investigation to invesigate the community its set in. a lot of great moments and incredibly well realised tone and world, but increasingly hampered by its need to use the plot to investigate the characters. the idea is in line with the wire, but the device and adaptive duty, holds the whole thing back a touch.

solid 7.5, rounded up. pretty far from perfect, but different and very stylised. it is both easy to follow and a piece obsessed with art and aspiring to be it. this show is at once accessible and also very interesting. it isnt hannibal the early years, as its concerned less with hannibal that with its protagonist, and is of a different style and tone than the films. it does work, and it is well worth watching. its production values are top notch and its an eerily curious piece. you will need to put your suspension of disbelief in a fridge, nestled amongst some choice cuts of carrion though.

great show, but things fell apart in this season as the show was obviously getting cancelled and the writers just had a ball. this show was one of the most immediately and apparantlly credible experiences on tv. "its all just a circus" was a good quote, and one thats been left with me after this show has ended. southland is like a "real life version" of cops; however this season was a circus that kind of fell in on itself. previous seasons were like being there in the streets of LA as the places darkest streets ran across some of its most fatigued minds. any season of southland is good. but the rest of them were great and this one is a duty rather than a pleasure. solid 7. the rest of this series is 8s and 9s.

the show is a reimagining of a british show, that was the product of its era and location. its an uneasy fit imho. both culturally and the context of its place on a timeline of changing circumstance, it is an awkward transplant. the british one was coming at the end of thatcherism and explored the potential chaos as the 80s turned into the 90s from the mindset of someone who was old in the 80s. this one has no such cultural momentum, and has a different tone. the first one was black comedy in a british sense. it was basically about following a rogue and a pantomime villain. this one plays it a lot more straight. whats lacking is the import of a "boss" or the comedy of (trying to think of an american version of this kind of dark comedy)"profit". culturally this show falls squarely between profit and boss. despite every thing i said, its very good. its just far too pedestrian and lacking in any cultural verve to be great. it is technically sound, and the production values are crisp. you wont be watching something that doesnt "work". **** is well worth watching. i dont know what it adds to the genre, but it seems to get all the right elements down to a tee. boss is far better. the original is of a different era and culture for even myself, and im a limey. things have changed quite a bit in the last 2 decades. this one was well worth watching, and any lacking was a product of its transplant status and a lack of a real character of its own. it moves the story and setting well enough, but the fault lines are from a different product. it needs its own rugged identity, and i think its only half way there, with too many echos of boss. boss was brilliant though. this is... available.
