WTF: Work Time Fun10
Jan 27, 2023
You will hate every second spent playing, yet you'll love it at the same time. This "game" is a parody of crappy minimum-wage jobs in the skin of a videogame. I can't guarantee you'll like it (you probably won't) but you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse0

I'm not terribly fond of the gameplay, but the art and music in this game are fantastic. Easily the best claymation-style graphics I've ever seen, and the overall tone of the game feels more in line with Kirby 64 and Dreamland 3 tham the RtDL style. It's too bad HAL backpedaled on this with Star Allies, which has less stylistically impressive graphics and only runs at 30fps.

Lost Odyssey8

Generally speaking the game is more of a 7/10. The battle system and music are solid, but dragged down by some questionable design decisions as well as the painfully mediocre plot (which is especially disappointing given how unique the premise is). HOWEVER the dream sequences in this game, that take the form of brief visual novel sections, contain some of the best storytelling I've ever encountered in a videogame. They take proper advantage of the concept of an immortal protagonist and really convey the fact that immortality is both a blessing and a curse. It's just a shame the core plot didn't have so much care put into it.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses9

Not as polished a game as Awakening, but I feel the things it does well (story concept, characters, customization) overshadow what it doesn't (story execution, technical issues, repetitive maps and monastery sections). Although the routes don't have enough unique aspects to justify playing through all four for anyone but the most dedicated fans, I think they do a great job of encouraging discussion about the game. It's really interesting to see the different perspectives of people who played the Blue Lions route vs. those who did the Black Eagles route, for example. I was disappointed to see Intelligent Systems ditch Hidari for character designs after how great Shadows of Valentia looked, but aside from that this game gave me a lot of hope for the future of the series.

I don't quite understand the low scores. Even 10 years later, this is STILL the only game where you can battle armies of up to 1 million troops. This is the definition of an extreme hack and slash title.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen9
May 11, 2020
Maybe not for everyone, but if you're able to look past the poor cutscenes and story presentation you'll find that Dragon's Dogma has some of the best gameplay in any ARPG to date. Pros: +Fantastic character creator +Unique pawn party system +Deep and varied combat mechanics +Extremely satisfying boss monsters to fight +Great soundtrack +Immersive dungeons littered throughout the world +A surprisingly interesting conclusion +Great sense of adventure, with enemies that actually feel threatening Cons: -Cutscene direction is mostly pretty abysmal -Characters look ugly -Story is generic fantasy fare for the most part -Pawns talk a lot The more I play the game the more I am able to look past its flaws, and at this point it's become one of my all time favorites. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a fun ARPG with a personality of its own.

Adventures of Mana8
Mar 27, 2020
It may look like a cheap mobile game from screenshots, but this is actually a solid remake of Final Fantasy Adventure. The music and gameplay are modernized while remaining faithful to the original, the menus are improved, and the graphics look pretty nice on Vita thanks to the game running at native res and 60fps. It's a basic game, but still enjoyable if you played it growing up or want something similar to the original Legend of Zelda with some Final Fantasy flair.

The gameplay takes some getting used to, but it's by no means bad. The combination of finicky controls and high difficulty seems to put people off, but it's worth forcing through those first few levels. Once you get acclimated the game ends up being pretty fun, albeit tricky, and is oozing style. Looks and runs great on the OLED Vita too.

The World Ends with You: Final Remix8
Feb 21, 2020
The gameplay is definitely worse than the original due to the concessions that had to be made in the jump between hardware. However, once you adjust to the new controls things are mostly fine outside of a few late game bosses that simply aren't fun as a result of the changes in the partner system, and end up being much more frustrating than they originally were. Outside of this though the gameplay is totally bearable, and I personally preferred playing docked over handheld as the separate buttons for movement and attacking helped reduce misread inputs in battle. Outside of gameplay, however, this is the same old TWEWY with a fresh new coat of paint. The graphics and music, while perhaps too true to the original at times, look and sound much better than the DS version; so much so that it makes it hard to go back. I just wish this port could've come to Wii U or even 3DS instead of Switch so that the unique battles of the original didn't have to be sacrificed for the enhanced presentation. As it stands there is still no "definitive" version of TWEWY, and the DS original remains the best of the lot. If you aren't able to secure the DS version for any reason though, then Final Remix is still a great way to experience one of the most unique and engrossing JRPGs of all time.

Gitaroo Man10

A fantastic rhythm game with a fun premise, great difficulty curve and solid gameplay. Considering there's multiplayer thrown in to boot, there's not much bad to be said about Gitaroo Man unless you're simply not a fan of music games.

Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics8
Jan 16, 2020
Sure, it's not as good as the original One Way Heroics on PC but I still got a lot of enjoyment from being able to take it with me on the go. The new art and UI are pretty nice too. If you're a newcomer to the franchise, I'd recommend the original on PC as it's much cheaper and in my opinion better. But if Vita/PS4 is your only choice then it's still a fun little pick up and play roguelike with a unique premise.

Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda8
Jun 13, 2019
A fun game that does both franchises justice. The gameplay is tight like the original NecroDancer, but now features an overworld that gives things a new spin. The graphics are improved from the original, and the remixed Zelda music tracks are absolutely fantastic. Co-op is also a nice addition that works surprisingly well. Despite all the praise I can give it, I do think $25 is a little but too hefty of a price tag for a game like this. It's very enjoyable, but the adventure won't take you anymore than 5-10 hours to beat. It should be noted that the overworld is randomly generated with each new save file you create, and dungeons are upon entry as well, but at the end of the day the general structure remains the same. In the end its still a nice game, especially if you liked the first NecroDancer, but it might be worth waiting for a sale.

SoulCalibur VI8
Jun 12, 2019
My favorite Soulcalibur title since II. They brought back the classic roster after trying to change things up with V, and I think they overall did a good job of choosing all the essential characters and focusing on fleshing out their stories as opposed to flooding the player with options. Only complaints I have are the long loadtimes (on base Xbox One) and that the season pass seems to all be items that should have been in the base game, spare 2B's guest appearance. Aside from that Soulcalibur VI lives up to the series name and is a fun fighter for both newcomers and veterans.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country9
Jun 12, 2019
A must play for those who enjoyed the original and worth looking into for anyone whose been curious about the series. Torna fixes most of the biggest flaws from the original; no more gacha, an improved battle system, specialized collect-points that can be viewed from the map, more interesting side quests, and a better core party. The only real weaknesses here are the rather short and simplistic story in comparison to the main game, which is to be expected, and the hefty sidequest completion requirement right at the game's climax.

Collection of Mana8
Jun 12, 2019
A solid collection, but whether it's worth the money might vary by person. $40 is pretty pricey for a collection of three 20+ year old games with no new additions, however these are fantastic games and I haven't encountered any issues with the emulation in my time with the game. Local co-op functionality in the two SNES titles is a nice bonus as well. It should be noted that this is also the first time Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3) has been made officially available outside of Japan, which I feel somewhat justifies the heftier price tag.

Crackdown 310
Feb 16, 2019
Realistically the game is an 8/10 for me, but I'm giving it a 10 to counter all the review bombing from people who haven't even played it. As someone who only ever played a few hours of the original Crackdown, this game is exactly what everyone should have expected. It doesn't break any boundaries, but it provides a fun sandbox with plenty of incentives to explore and level up. Having Terry Crews be a playable avatar fits the Crackdown universe well, and co-op is a fun addition. The lack of destruction in the campaign is somewhat disappointing, but not enough to justify the crazy low reviews the game is getting. I think people were overhyping the game since its the only Xbox exclusive, without even considering what Crackdown is supposed to be. There's no cinematic story or technically impressive moments like in RDR2 or GoW, but Crackdown wasn't trying to be anything like those games in the first place.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D9
Feb 28, 2015
Majora's Mask 3D is a well-constructed enhancement of one of the most unique games not only in its respective series, but in all of gaming. The new graphics put the original to shame, yet the intriguing atmosphere is still left perfectly intact. Anyone who is familiar with the original will notice one or two questionable changes, though someone who is playing the game for the first time won't notice a thing. Luckily, the good changes in Majora's Mask 3D far outweigh the bad ones (most notable being the new bomber's notebook). All in all, Majora's Mask 3D is (sadly) just as unique today as it was 15 years ago.

Cave Story 3D8
Jan 8, 2015
If you've never played Cave Story before, then this game is a great investment. In my opinion, Cave Story is one of the greatest 2D-platformers of all time. Needless to say, I was eager when a physical version of the game was finally announced. However, the game was a bit disappointing. The most startling problem for me is the framerate. If this game ran at 60fps, like every other version does, then I would have loved it. However, it doesn't even run 30fps. To make it worse, at (albeit rare) times, I noticed framerate drops below the already sub-par framerate. This really slows down the face-paced style of the game, and detracts from the otherwise great experience. While the graphics themselves aren't anything special, I felt that they would have been fine with a decent framerate. Some areas of the game, such as Mimiga Village, actually look better than ever in my opinion. I have some other minor complaints with the game, but nothing really worth noting. I'd say theres not much a reason to get this game now that you can get classic Cave Story in 3D on the eShop for a fraction of the price, unless you really want a physical copy of this masterpiece (like me). Graphics: 5 Sound: 9 Gameplay: 10 Lasting Appeal: 8 Overall: 8
