This is a ten just for the sheer guts and organization of making such a movie. (Where carrying a camera can get you shot by a sniper as 220 dead journalists have found out.) This will give a whole new and real look at what it is like to live in inhuman conditions and knowing day after day that at any moment you can be blow to bits, as tens of thousands already have. Maybe the best movie ever about human survival while living in what can only be called a horror show. A great example that you don't have to spend zillion$ to make a good and creative movie. This movie, "brings it home".

Standard 30 minute script spread over 2 hours plus. Nothing emotionally to grab onto and it would have been a big improvement to have the actors lip sync the songs by the original singers. Not worthy of any of the Academy Award nominations (usual Hollywood corporate sell job) except for Fanning who didn't get one.

This movie is proof that Hollywood does not know how to make entertaining movies. It's imaginative and way over the top which is great. It's highly dependent on computer generation, but in this case "so what?" The violence is usually ridiculous and the laughs are hysterical and the politics are right on. The story line is absurd and there is no pretext to appear realistic which is the failure of so many American movies. It's total theater, it's fiction, the acting is great, it's colorful, and that is what makes it a great movie. It's pure entertainment.

I gave this movie an 8 despite some short comings because it was very well directed and performed. It was based on an excellent book by Miriam Toews and because of time constraints some of the story line may have been confusing to some viewers who had not read the book. Also Polley took some liberties in the script to have the women's speech a little more sophisticated than that of the book's. The leads provided great performances, Polley's directing was excellent and the movie required some intellectual involvement by the audience, something definitely lacking in most movies made the last few decades.

An existential story done in 60s and 70s "arthouse" style. Superb black and white, and compelling with its off the wall production. Kafka type angst creatively done. Refreshing change from the mainstream.

Finally, some real art in a movie again. Most viewers will stop watching early in the movie which is understandable since we've had years of films aimed for the 30 second attention span. This movie is for the thoughtful and those with some film knowledge. With its David Lynch/Coen brothers flavor and excellent acting it was a treat over the brain dead high budget movies of the past few decades. Its weakness was there should have been more of Toni Collette and David Thewlis who were simply fantastic. Dialogue driven movies are unfortunately a rarity.

This is the most over rated movie since Cameron's Titantic. It is impressive looking, but that's what $150 million movie should be. The overly repetitive dialogue - how many ways can Pacino/Hoffa tell us that he takes no s...? - made the overly long movie boring. Sure, big name actors doing their final kick at the can together(?)is a draw, but another movie where a psychopath is the anti-hero is just one too many times. Don't worry if you miss it.
