Age of Empires: Castle Siege

This game only has the soundtrack and visuals to go for it. Gameplay is completely unlike the Age of Empires series we know and love, and instead is far more Clash of Clans style. Build up your empire, but wait. No seriously, wait, because you have to wait a long time to do a lot of things. Unless you spend some real money, of course. Not to mention that multiplayer matchmaking is running off of the wrong thing, meaning that advanced players can go up against new players and run them into the ground. Try it if you want, it's free, but don't expect Age of Empires. This isn't Age of Empires.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom

I have a great history of this game with my brother and my old PS2's. If you love Spongebob, you'll love this game. It truly is an open-world game, even if it seems linear at certain points. The gameplay is pretty phenomenal between all of the characters (Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy). Each one of them has certain moves that you can't do with the others, which requires you to get accustomed to each of them for certain challenges. None of them are too difficult on your hands. Gameplay is pretty fluid. I CAN say that the gameplay in Battle for Bikini Bottom is far better than most other Spongebob games. Far better. The story isn't too interesting; it's something you would probably expect to see in an episode of Spongebob. But it's certainly better than other Spongebob games. The music is pretty fun to listen to, for any age who enjoys the happy-go-lucky themes of Spongebob. The boss battle tracks are exceptional, for the mini-bosses as well. The final boss music is something that a lot of people may have heard without knowing it came from this game. If you love Spongebob, you'll love this game. It was a huge part of my childhood, but any gamer could pick it up. Lots of replay value, and lots of fun to be had.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy

Absolutely amazing. There is no way I can describe this game any differently. Assault Horizon Legacy, unlike what its title may seem to imply, is not related to Assault Horizon in any way. AHL is a remake of Ace Combat 2, a PlayStation title that screamed "arcade." This game fleshes out AC2 in every way possible. The story is fairly interesting. Nothing too memorable, unlike Ace Combat 5 or Zero, but interesting nonetheless. The real gem in the story is in the ace squadrons that the player has to come up against. They're charismatic in their own ways, giving a breath of personality. Olsen, Edge, and Slash add their own personalities and tales into the mix, making it a little humorous at times. Again, nothing memorable, but enjoyable. The gameplay is absolutely top-notch. The game takes advantage of every button on the 3DS (except the touch screen, but you won't find that to be an issue), and does so very fluidly so you're never forgetting which is which. Especially if you've played Ace Combat 6, the controls will come naturally to you. AHL does introduce a new gameplay feature in the series, called Action Maneuvers. When used offensively, it lines up the plane behind another enemy plane, but then it leaves it up to you (nothing like DFM, which asks you to keep lined up to the enemy plane and increases the strength of your missiles and guns). When used defensively, you dodge a missile by pressing a button and moving the circle pad in the correct direction. Very fun and exhilarating in the heat of battle. The music, sounds, and voiceovers are absolutely amazing. The music is still breathtaking to me to this day, and I find myself listening to the soundtrack constantly. It's that good. If you own a 3DS and you want some action, get this game. You won't regret it.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

Quick Description: This is a really good flight sim/arcade game. It's just not Ace Combat, and doesn't deserve to have it in its title. Assault Horizon is not nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Unlike games like H.A.W.X., there is an actual (if half-assed) story present in Assault Horizon. Its plot twists may be predictable at times, but I liked being able to see and hear the characters interact with each other. Bishop having a personal nemesis in Markov, who taunts you periodically, also gives it an extra push above the other "America vs. Russian rebels" games. The gameplay is solid. It could be better, but it's solid as it is. Dogfight Mode, consistently referred to as what killed this game, is NOT nearly as bad as others claim it to be. There are a few instances where it's required, but the majority of the game does not require DFM. When it IS used, it gives a cutscene feel to your dogfight with enemy planes, even though, as many seem to claim otherwise, it is NOT an on-rails mechanic. I appreciated DFM for making the dogfights more intense and fast-paced. ASM, the ground attack version of DFM, was fairly interesting as it wasn't on-rails either, so you could get severely damaged if you weren't paying attention. Otherwise, the controls (once switching them to Original in the settings) were pretty good. Of course, the AC-130 mission and the helicopter missions could have been and should have been removed from the game. Not that they were bad, it's just that their design leads to their demise no matter what could have been done. They were annoying, drawn-out missions that I will never replay if I don't have to. Music was top-notch. No doubt about it. All in all, Assault Horizon is an escape from the series. It's not Ace Combat 7, and it does not sit with the greats. But it is a fairly well-balanced game with a few nitpicks here and there. Worth it if you can find it less than $30. Give it a try.

Bentley's Hackpack

Bentley's Hackpack was a surprise, and a welcome one at that. Two of the hacking minigames System Cracker and Alter Ego are very fun and I enjoyed every single level of them. Their challenges were difficult enough to give me a run for the three dollars I spent. Spark Runner, however, the minigame I very much loathe because of its motion control, was way more aggravating than fun in here since the difficulty was amped up. The prizes offered at Dimitri's counter were nice, but a cross-play feature with Thieves in Time would have been interesting to see (unlocking a certain prize in the Hackpack would give Sly a new ability, for example?). But again, this was three dollars, and it was a lot of fun to hack my way to completing it.
