It's a funny and thought-provoking B-Movie in the best sense of the term. Rockwell, Juno, and Haley Lu (as well as Michael Pena in a smaller role) are all uniformly terrific.
It's a relatively fun movie, but it wholly cribs it's essential concepts from Triangle of Sadness. I've never seen anything quite like it! The gore and the vomit make it more than your average season of Survivor. I like the interplay between the two leads.
It's great watching Julia Roberts go to work in a complex role, in a movie that, unfortunately, never comes together. Quite an idealized version of Yale...
Not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. The story makes sense, there is heart to it, and the music is perfect. Greta Lee in particular is awesome in her role. I was dreading Evan Peters, but he wasn't even all that bad.
In an era where there's very little risk-taking going on in Hollywood, especially in the horror genre, it's refreshing to see a fun flick like this one. You leave the movie with a smile on your face. It's got a semi-pro strain of Othello in the mix, but not enough to make you squirm.
Just a damned good film that demands to be seen on a big screen with other rabid movie fans around you. Beautiful shots, GREAT score, and incredible acting all around. Beyond that, the film has SUCH a big heart. Savor this one.
It's an excellent film, but it definitely puts you through the emotional wringer, which I was only semi-prepared for. The brotherhood development is outstanding and the broader themes are effective. NOT recommended for everyone, but it touched a nerve with me.
A TON of laugh-out-loud moments in this one, and it does have a heart, despite the subject matter. It's a fun night out. My whole theaters was laughing together, which was cool to see. Screw the streaming - get out to the big screen my people.
I'm shocked by how good it was... I was expecting average pap, but JLC is outstanding, the film has a real heart, and the script/pacing is excellent. Solid summer comedy -
Outstanding film with pitch-perfect tone. I can't believe this is a first feature. Eva Victor nails this performance, and Lucas Hedges as the neighbor is solid casting. I love that they didn't need to show the truly disturbing element of the story - it's more effective leaving it to our imagination.
I mean, it's all a question of expectations. If you go in with rock bottom expectations like I did, you can be pleasantly surprised. Just know that there's NOTHING special about this film. However, the mid-credit sequence makes much of it worth it.
All I can say is this - compared to recent superhero movies, it's marginally better, but nowhere close to the first two with Christopher Reeve. The dog parts are cute but excessive. By far the highlight of this film is Mr. Fantastic. He needs his own movie.
Solid movie in a lot of ways, but absolutely not a horror film, if that's what you're looking for. I like that it's a spare hour and 25 minutes. And there's food for thought, for sure. Good for a post-date chat.
Far better than I expected it to be, but not special in the scheme of things. I was constantly on guard, hoping it wouldn't go down cliched avenues, but it never did, which was nice. But it didn't have a TON to say. I almost feel like this is the movie that 50 Shades of Gray wanted to be.
I greatly enjoyed this film - has to be seen in the theater. Nick Hoult is incredible in it - I bought his character completely. And Jude Law is fantastic. I'm never a fan of post-film commentary, and it similarly doesn't work here. Oh yes, it feels like a Mississippi Burning for current era in many story elements.
This movie will sneak up on you. It absolutely struck a chord with me, and I can't wait for my pals to see it to find out if they react similarly. The lead actress is fantastic, as are her friends, her family, and her future self!
I'd suggest you just rent an old Don Rickles stand-up routine, or maybe an Andrew Dice Clay video. But this **** is thimble-deep and boring. I never thought I'd say that about a Deadpool movie. But this multiverse nonsense that Marvel has been wedded to for so many years now is just played out.
Damned good film - amazing mood, terrific acting all around, and none of the "cheap" jumpscares you get in many modern horror flicks. Alicia Witt, i particular, is amazing. And Cage? The party rolls on..... T-Rex style.
I greatly enjoyed Chapter 1. It doesn't hold your hand on the exposition, and there's clearly much more story to tell, but the acting is excellent, the cinematography is beautiful, and I love the veteran actors - including Costner, Sienna Miller, Jenna Malone, and plenty of others.
This is Jodie Comer's film, and she's fantastic in it. In fact, this is her best role since Killing Eve. Tom Hardy is also excellent. But the dude who played Elvis really doesn't have to do much in this film - and he doesn't. Great cast overall - not a ton happens, but it's a solid 2 hours.
Really good Doc -I only wish that they touched on Weekend at Bernie's, and Andrew McCarthy's mega-post-Brat-Pack career in travel books and TV **** you didn't know that, you might have thought he did nothing since those 80s movies, which couldn't be farther from the truth!
Easily one of the goriest movies I've ever seen. It's a touch slow, but that's part of it. It's a stripped-down, art-house version of Friday the 13th. All I know is that my head was on a swivel as a left the theater.
My only criticism is that it's maybe 10 - 15 minutes too long. Otherwise, it's a charming film, perfect for this season. Sure, they are empty calories, but I'll take these actors....
What a let-down. The bulk of the move was just a boring post-apocalyptic style road show - something that has been done MUCH better previously. And you never even attempt to delve into WHY there is a Civil War. And the ending? Preposterous and stupid.
Transfixed for an hour and 44 minutes. The cast is amazing, and the way the story unfolds in that noir fashion, with the blood and guts added to the mix, is just the doctor ordered in this era of no-risk-taking in Hollywood. Kudos to all involved!
The music is great, and the lead actor who plays Bob - and the actor playing his wife Rita - are uniformly fantastic. But there's nothing in terms of connective tissue. It's fairly inert. Also liked the clips of the real Bob at the end of the film.
It's a pretty brutal film, but absolutely works on you're emotions. It isn't exactly "KIDS goes on UK Spring Break", but it's close... without the HIV. Very interesting how it depicts young female friendships (and, eventually, young male friendships). I also found it interesting that the film has English language subtitles, even though they people are speaking English, innit!
There are so many good and fun elements to this film, and the actors (the two leads and the sister) are uniformly outstanding, but something about the directing, the editing, or how the story is told is just lacking. It needed a few more cracks at the script, perhaps. Also, maybe add a score? Too many moments of quiet nothingness, especially in the first half. Wanted to like this much more than I did.
The critics were a bit too tough on this one. It may be a touch long, but it's never boring, and very funny. It's an over-the-top extravaganza, and it works. Certainly not amazing by any stretch but a 36? As John Winger once said in Stripes, "I've got to live with a 36?"
Really good cast, but it's sadly just a little boring.... inert. My theater laughed fairly energetically when the credits rolled, which I don't believe is the desired effect.
I wasn't aware that this is an adaptation of the musical - probably should have been - and I almost walked out after the opening sequence. I'm glad I didn't because it's a fun film - just not all that ambitious.
It's fun, and the action sequences are great - Statham is fun to root for as usual - but it's just a tad... boring. The could have done better with Jeremy Irons - perhaps get the director from Margin Call to give him that needed gravitas.
It's not unenjoyable, but it's tepid. I love the actors in it, but there's just not a whole lot happening in it. And yeah, the ultimate solution to the story is clever, but it doesn't justify the prior 90 mins fully. For a lesson on how to do this better - how to hit the dramatic beats - try Ghost.
I had heard that this would be a "tough" movie to stomach given the story-story nature of things, but the performances are uniformly fantastic. With the amount of material they had to cover, it could have easily been a 6 to 8 episode season, but they made solid choices throughout. And the feeling of hope and renewal at the end is welcomed.
It's just a lot of fun. For a rom-com with appealing young actors set in beautiful Australia (and with a delightful supporting cast - Bryan Brown, etc.),you could do much worse.
What an outstanding film. I remember seeing Alive years ago and felt it was much more salacious with the cannibalism, etc. This film has an aura of reverence and grace. Truly a beautiful experience.
Outstanding. Easily the best movie I've seen all year, and likely among the best in the last 5 - 10 years. Just a visual treat, the acting is superb, and the story is incredible. What an absolutely surprise and a treat!
It's much better than I thought it would be - but that's only because I had no idea what the movie would be about walking in. It takes a dark turn, and that was refreshingly interesting! The two leads are solid.
