Ara Fell's a JRPG with heavy inspiration from the 16-bit era. While players would be cautious picking up another SNES-inspired JRPG, Ara Fell is nothing to be cautious of. While the game doesn't bring anything new to the table, it doesn't need to. The game remains faithful to the games that inspired it with a crafting mechanic, turned-based battles, and class changes. Exploration is given a slight update in that the player can swim and climb/jump small ledges. The story, while it won't blow your mind, does a great job at pacing and never takes itself too seriously, made clear in the delightful interactions and dialogue the characters have with each other. The beautiful sprite-work and delicious soundtrack do nothing but add charm to this already delightfully charming game. And though the Epilogue did leave a bit something to be desired, it doesn't take away anything from the positive experience I had with it. Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition is an easy recommendation if you love 16-bit inspired JRPGs, or craving something easy-going w/ tasty sprite work.

People should consider Transistor if only to experience an ingenious way to tell a story. Set in a visually appealing steampunk world with a delicious soundtrack, coupled with an engaging combat system makes Transistor an indie action RPG worth playing today, roughly 6 years after its initial release. An interesting blend of music, traditional story-telling, and even combat mechanics play a part in unraveling the lore and destruction in the world of Cloudbank. Add in a leveling system, and a way to customize your protagonist, Redd, to fit your style of combat-engagement and you have a game that'll stand up well past a single play-through. This game is an easy recommendation for people who enjoy unconventional story-telling, a dynamic combat system.
