Breath of Death VII: The Beginning2

Humanity should keep and enhance what was good in the past and discard the bad things, right? Well it seems that a lot of "self-proclaimed" game designers think the opposite. Take this game for example: keep a random encounters ratio of 10 monsters/minute, keep the non-existent interaction with the world, keep a simplicistic combat system (they weren't so simplicistic even back then) and discard good stories, nice graphics (the graphics of this game would have been considered amateurish at best on a super nes), gameplay, exploration, sense of wonder. Even for free this game would be a complete waste of time. think about it for a minute: life is short, there are thousands of games that deserve to be played and also a lot of interesting activities to do besides games. Why should you waste hours of your life playing a game that's empty and annoying? Just for a couple of (bad) jokes? Rather donate 89p to charity...

I completely agree with Jackrov's review and I'm really sorry to see that people is so dumb nowadays (basing this observation on the "professional" reviews). This game feels exactly like the old time gems that made the history of the video game media (games for c64, nes, atari vcs etc.) where very little if nothing was explained to you and you had to figure out what to do and how to do and also why to do it. Toki Tori 2 feels the same, every area, every inhabitant of its world is surrounded by a halo of mystery like I hadn't experienced much in my latest years of gaming (Fez has been a rare example). Probably in this era of one-button mobile games there isn't the "enlightment" necessary to understand a game like this and in fact many reviewers complained about the lack of "tutorials, hints, motivation" etc. completely missing the point. It has been a bold choice for the developers to follow this road (and it's certainly hasn't been done to reduce the development costs because production value is outstanding for a game sold at this price and the soundtrack is amazing by the way). If you think that you are "deep" (or old) enough to understand a game like this please don't overlook it, it would really be a pity...

Honestly I can't imagine how anyone on this world could like this game. It's the worst bunch of clichés you'll ever find in a game. Game-play mechanics are old, unimaginative, boring and poorly executed but the story and the ****... story and characters are something unbelievable. I think that even an 8 years old kid should find the story offensive. This game should be played by everyone only to see how bad a bad game can be :) It's also so long and pretentious that it deserves the title of one of the worst games ever made.

This game is a masterpiece in my opinion. It blends an original story with a huge load of interesting game-play mechanics. It borrows the best aspects of many different games and mix them together in a refreshing and deep experience while adding its own "personality" to the recipe. I found the graphics very well done and, most of all, very atmospheric and engrossing. This is especially true because graphics are supported by a really great soundtrack. Story-wise the game succeeds in being mysterious and metaphysical while keeping players interest on discovering what's going on. The relationship between the "hero" and the "girl", the two main characters of the game, is also very moving and well presented. Highly recommended to players who loved Demon's Souls, Ico, Vagrant Story or who want a very different take on a dungeon crawler.
