Super Mario Odyssey

Honestly, I'm really confused about this game, because it's the only one that makes me feel this way. When I first discovered Super Mario Odyssey, I loved finding all those Moons, experiencing the story, and so on... Honestly, if someone told me, "You can rediscover one game exactly as if you were playing it for the first time again because I'll erase all your memories of it. Which one would you choose?", I would answer without hesitation, "Super Mario Odyssey!". And yet, this game is far from being my favorite Mario. For example, nowadays, I much prefer replaying 3D World. So why is that? In reality, I don't really know myself, but I'll try to explain it as best as I can. Yes, this game is objectively exceptional and has a massive amount of content, but maybe that's ultimately what I dislike about it. I really don't like the extremely high number of Moons, but not because it makes rewards feel less meaningful, no, it's for another reason. When I first heard this criticism of the game and then played it, I thought to myself: "How can anyone complain that there's too much content?", but it was only when I replayed the game after finishing it that I understood. First of all, you should know that I'm not a huge fan of open-world games, and, to me, most of SMO's kingdoms are semi-open worlds. When I replay the game and enter a kingdom, I think back to all the Moons I collected the first time around, and I end up feeling completely overwhelmed, to the point where the sheer number of Moons makes my head spin. After finishing it once, the game no longer has the same flavor because, in my opinion, it's like finding yourself in front of a mountain of homework and not knowing where to start, unlike a first playthrough where you simply explore by instinct (okay, I'm exaggerating a bit, it's still more enjoyable than homework). A lot of things bother me about this game beyond that: why is the co-op mode so bad? Seriously, is it really that difficult to simply add another player on the screen? Most of the bosses are bad. The Broodals are a chore to fight because their battles are bland and uninteresting. The few other bosses are more interesting, but they're not exceptional either. The final boss (which you fight twice) receives almost no improvements between the two encounters, which makes it really boring. The truly interesting ending is what happens afterward (which I won't spoil here). The story is very bland, just like in almost every Mario game, but when you look at the rest of the game, it really stands out in a bad way. On the other hand, I think this game has a genuine aura (just like the Galaxy games before it) thanks to its jazzy and catchy soundtrack. I still listen to its music today. Getting 100% completion is very tedious, with some Moons being genuinely awful. Mario's movement options are incredible, and probably the game's greatest strength. Objectively, this game is very good, but I don't love it as much as most people do, to be honest. I don't have much to say about this game. The story mode is very good and contains levels that are better than those found in some 2D Mario games. However, if you don't have Nintendo Switch Online, you'll only be able to play this mode and none of the ones I'm about to **** level editor is well-equipped, but you still need to be at least somewhat creative to make good use of it. The tutorial videos are useful, although not particularly engaging. The World Maker feature is an incredible addition. Endless Challenge is a good idea on paper, but it's undermined by an issue that I'll talk about shortly. There are, however, some major problems. The online mode suffers from a lot of lag, making it practically unplayable. The game is entirely driven by its community, which means that 99% of the levels you'll play are average at best, if not outright bad. Even within the "Popular" category, I feel that levels are no longer as interesting as they used to be. You keep running into the same types of levels over and over again, and plagiarism is **** in any given week and you'll always find the same things: refresh levels (which I find unbearable), speedrun levels (almost always in the Super Mario World style with generic Unity-like background music), music levels (especially Kirby-themed ones), and mini-games (tennis, spot the difference, and so on). Even the most popular levels feel repetitive and uninspired at this **** game itself is very good, but the levels created by the community are far less imaginative than they once were, and it's very easy to grow bored of them. I'm not usually a fan of fighting games, and this Smash Bros was my very first one... I absolutely loved it. The game may seem a bit button-mashy at first, but if that's your impression after playing it, then you haven't really understood it. There are countless inputs, techniques, and mechanics to learn. This is probably one of the most strategic multiplayer games on the Switch. What I love about this game is both the quantity and the quality of its content. There are tons of game modes, and some of the most interesting ones are almost hidden away. Completing everything is a long and difficult process, which makes for a genuine **** for Smash mode itself, there is an incredible amount of customization available to create your own matches, along with a huge roster of characters, nearly all of whom feel unique. I love the fact that this game can be both a casual party game (with items, Smash Balls, and so on) and an ultra-competitive fighting game. However, that is also one of the game's weaknesses...I am TERRIBLE at this game, and I made the mistake of trying the online mode in 2025. Very bad idea. The mode is packed with tryhards who will combo you endlessly without giving you any chance to react. If this is your first time playing Smash, you'll either have to grind hard or wish you had been there back in 2018 when everyone was still discovering the game and casual players were far more common. Finally, the story mode becomes repetitive rather quickly. I personally enjoy completing single-player games, but I just couldn't get into this one. The game artificially increases the challenge by giving you various handicaps and disadvantages, which can make battles very frustrating if you're not in the right mindset. The map is difficult to read, and some elements are hidden a little too well. The boss fights aren't particularly memorable (except for the final one), and there aren't enough of them. The various battle modifiers also start repeating themselves very quickly. Since I'm genuinely bad at the game, I eventually had to lower the difficulty because I found some fights extremely frustrating, and the game doesn't even try to hide how difficult they are.SPOILER WARNING (YOU CAN SKIP TO THE NEXT PARAGRAPH IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED ADVENTURE MODE YET).When you finish the first world, defeat the boss, and then realize there's still another entire world waiting for you, it's honestly dreadful. I'm the kind of person who always wants to at least finish the main story before forming a final opinion, so I forced myself to continue. World 2 is better than the first because it's less linear. World 3 is quite interesting thanks to a very cool mechanic and an excellent final **** conclude, if you enjoy Smash Bros or fighting games in general, you'll enjoy this game. It's even better if you have someone to play with, although the CPU opponents aren't too bad either. It offers a huge amount of content. However, don't buy this game solely for its story mode, as you may end up disappointed! In my opinion, this is the best entry in the Mario Kart franchise and probably the best Nintendo Switch game overall. The items are perfectly balanced (with plenty of twists and turns, but also enough strategies to minimize their impact), the roster is incredible and comprehensive, and it offers the highest number of tracks: 96 (with the DLC, which is absolutely worth it). The online mode is quite satisfying, and the ability to customize items in VS Race mode is a really cool feature. Some tracks are genuinely interesting (especially those with multiple laps that differ from one another). It's an amazing game to play with friends, as a couple, and so on.Unfortunately, it's not all positive. The single-player experience is rather disappointing. Once you've "mastered" the game and learned the key techniques, you can practically steamroll it regardless of the AI difficulty. As a result, you eventually have to pay for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription if you want to keep having fun. Moreover, the "transition period" between these two modes is quite frustrating: you're too strong for races against bots but still not good enough for online races. It's also a fairly time-consuming game that requires a lot of grinding and dedication. Finally, I feel that the game lacks game modes. There's Grand Prix mode, which you'll play for a few hours to unlock everything and then instantly forget about. Time Trials are much the same (except for top players who use them to practice). Battle Mode is worth trying, but it's not particularly outstanding either. VS Race mode is very enjoyable for beginners or for those who just want to relax. Online mode is fantastic for players looking for a challenge. As you can tell, most players will spend the majority of their time in only one or two game modes. An additional mode that genuinely brought something new to the experience would be **** conclude, if you like Mario Kart, this game is made for you! However, you should be prepared for the fact that you'll probably end up paying for Nintendo Switch Online as well. That's where the game truly reveals its full potential. So get ready, because things are about to get heated on the track!
