If you, like me, had heard whispers that this revival was going to be Lynch’s vision almost entirely unconstrained by network notes--if you, like me, were buckled in for two hours of uncompromising surrealism and horror, this premiere delivered.

These episodes scattered a lot of fascinating imagery, disconnected story ideas, and inter-dimensional nightmare antics in front of its audience; it’s up to viewers to try and put the pieces together, or (my preferred method) simply soak in every bizarre tableau with glee. ... Twin Peaks (subtitled The Return) is a worthy new entry in his canon.

The violence against women in the first two episodes, especially in comparison to what was experienced by men, stands out as perhaps the most antiquated element of the new series--a series we’re looking forward to following, but hoping that it remembers women deserve as much a chance to be heroes as men.

It's too soon, ultimately, to conclude whether "Twin Peaks" will justify the investment or, like many a revival, should have stayed in limbo. The first two hours should, at least, pique any fan's curiosity.

The stories will likely prove too confusing to viewers who have never seen the series and don’t have the time to play catch-up. Much of the two episodes were slow-going and the Buckhorn scenes, while striving for the quirky humor Noah Hawley has perfected on FX’s “Fargo,” weren’t weird enough.

It’s hard not to feel like I’ve been completely, utterly duped. The two-hour kickoff did not repair the damage wrought by Season 2. ... To say I was disappointed by the revival’s indulgent, incomprehensible, taxing opening act would be a towering understatement.

I had made peace with the the thought of Inland Empire being David's magnum opus , given its sheer intensity and unforgettable nightmarish lasting impressions. Like Mulholland on acid. Then The Return came along. Everything right, original, quirky and quintessential Lynchy was still there , Twins Peaks scenes are in every episode . But this final statement of Lynch before his passing years later , it goes beyond the rest of his oeuvre. It takes the ruthless views on humankind's descend into madness, of Inland Empires Hollywood gone Dante , and extends it's Darkness to Oppenheimer and the core, the soul of humankind. With the ancient spirit of Judy and Bob as its drivers, humans are exponentially more prone to evil 25 years later. Gotta light, ep8 if it had been a standalone film might be in contention for Lynchs best. My mind was blown out of this world at the time of my first viewing of the Return. The artistic freedom and bravery was a cherry on top of a career as a director that only guys like Tarkovsky , Kubrick, and at a distance Sorrentino , Aronofsky or Malick can approach. The strength of the Return is this : never losing what made Peaks the arching achievement of 90s TV and the whole genesis of all that made HBO good. But also adding razor sharp commentary about humankind's wayward direction in the 21st century , while being a true artist in the process, the imagery and use of colors and strange otherworldly atmosphere and music.. An impression of the opioid crisis is there . A sharp evolution of the beautiful town that was Twin Peaks into the crazy quickly modernizing urbanization of any place , the micro agressions of every day life. The coming of the digital age . Its all there . Even the Marvellization of modern film gets a big slap from Lynch in a hysterical funny way . TO top if all off the old master found time to present us some phenomenal music from his own favorites at the roadhouse. Truly unforgettable. Nothing comes close for me after, movie or series.
