They’ve upped the ante and made the format even twistier. Episode one, with its rapid, punchy reveals, leaves us and the players with plenty of threads to pull on – and exudes the producers’ confidence in the coming payoff.

The Traitors is not resting on its laurels. As a study of human behaviour – of deception, manipulation, self-preservation – it remains captivating. As perhaps the best example of social experiment-style reality TV, it has cemented its place in the cultural firmament.

What we do know is that it was amusing to see the three chosen traitors’ faces as they were castrated before our eyes, forced to do what they are told and operating on three cylinders, not four. Yes, all right, I admit it — it’s very clever.

If we must have reality TV shows, this is probably the best of the bunch. No one thus far seems to be in the calibre of last year’s winner, Harry Clark, who played a (ruthless) blinder, and I can’t imagine any will be. We’ll soon see.

It’s a winning formula, and this is a show that builds excitement with each episode. The first three episodes are available on iPlayer, and by the end we’ve had it all: ruthless backstabbing, paranoia and a decent twist (some of the competitors are more than they seem). Winkleman is great, playing along but never taking it too seriously.

This third season of The Traitors is, naturally, more self-aware. Contestants know the various gameplans employed, know that the producers keep several cards up their sleeves. There is a sense that competitors want to guarantee more screentime by playing games within the games, presumably at the encouragement of the production team.

It does get better (or at least more brain-scrambling for the contestants) once the Faithful begin guessing the identities of the Traitors and publicly voting to expel one another. That starts in episode two. My advice would be to take a break during the “missions” and enjoy the rest of the show while trying not to be too depressed by humanity’s innate capacity for bare-faced deceit.

A game show with rules that put players in clueless situations, so their personalities make the entertainment. UK is much much better than US, Canada and Australia. Celebrity Traitor UK is also good. Celebrity Traitor US is trash.

This is a terrible gameshow for many reasons. Firstly, the black and brown ppl always get voted off first. While I have grown to accept this from most BBC competitive shows. It is still hard to accept. People are pitted against each other to decieve and stab each other in the back. It gives the impression that deception, back stabbing, lying and dishonesty is acceptable. I hope the contestants get emotional and phycological therapy as having to pretend and find traitors can have a negative impact on wellbeing. While this programme is entertaining. I hate how People are forced to bring down others.
