Outside of TOS this is peak Star Trek in every way! Love the cast and stories. The plots are moralistic without being preachy and the overall universe is everything that I hope the future holds for humanity!

Talking about Star Trek: The Next Generation is not just talking about a TV series. It’s talking about a way of understanding the world. About a vision of the future that doesn’t rely on force, fear, or the humiliation of others. Everything here follows a different path: thinking before acting, putting yourself in someone else’s place, and accepting that every decision, even the right one, carries moral weight. From the very beginning, TNG makes it clear that it’s not interested in easy spectacle. It doesn’t aim to dazzle with fireworks or shock value. It wants to think—and it wants you to think with it. There’s no rush, no need to raise voices. Emotions don’t need to be underlined because everything is built through dialogue, doubt, and uncomfortable questions that often have no clean answers.Action here isn’t about shooting first. Action is about deciding. Deciding well. Deciding badly. And living with the consequences. In a television landscape obsessed with immediate impact, TNG does something almost radical: it trusts the intelligence of its audience.Jean-Luc Picard is not a conventional hero. He doesn’t dominate or intimidate. He leads by listening. By thinking. By accepting that perfect solutions don’t always exist. His authority comes from respect, not fear—and in this series, respect is earned through principles. What many people today label as “woke” was already here. The difference is that it didn’t need slogans. Racism, authoritarianism, colonialism, identity, individual rights, gender, cultural diversity—all of it was explored with restraint and intelligence, through ethical conflict rather than **** doesn’t tell you what to think. It places you inside a moral dilemma and leaves you there. What defines a life? What makes someone a person? Where do rights begin? When does obedience become complicity? That’s where Data becomes essential. Through a character who isn’t human, the series explores humanity better than almost anything else on television. These stories aren’t about technology; they’re about **** Federation itself isn’t naïve or perfect. It’s full of contradictions and temptations toward control. And that’s the point. The series understands that authoritarianism doesn’t always arrive with uniforms—it often comes wrapped in reasonable **** episode feels disposable. Even the quieter ones add something: a question, a fracture, a reflection. This isn’t a show with filler—it’s a show built on necessary **** performances match that ambition. Nothing is exaggerated. Everything feels measured and human. Patrick Stewart anchors the series with restraint, while the rest of the cast grows organically, creating characters defined by contradictions rather than **** doesn’t confuse darkness with depth. It can look directly at injustice without becoming cynical. It criticizes power without replicating it.That’s why it still matters. Not out of nostalgia, but coherence. It believed in what it was saying—and it still challenges us to live up to it.

What the heck. People rating this series below a 7 are patently full of BS. This series is classic. Is it growing a bit long in the tooth. Yes, some of the special effects, etc. are a bit dated now. Generally thought the show managed to expand upon the original series in such satisfying ways. It managed to stay true to the Trek roots, serve as an engaging imaginative escape adventure into the future, use actual science all over the place, and serve as that lens to see ourselves through an idealized future/aka a morality play. This is an all time Trekverse classic!!

Paid "critics" OMG RUFKM? This series became a much-needed cultural symbol of the nineties. The wall was gone, people were starting to buy computers and AOL came online. TNG was our ubiquitous cultural symbol of hope. Hope in survival. Hope in common sense. Hope in unity. A freaking six, wtf??

One of the best Star Trek series and my favourite, when I was in school time. It is useful to watch it from the beginning, so I didnt know there was a background story (Q). Some of the characters are great: Picard, Worf, Data, Troi. Sometimes the feminism is annoying. But most of the time the stories are interesting and shows some difficult conflicts.

Only the first season is rated but it doesn't really get good until 3rd season. It is really good after that.

The gold standard for Star Trek. A show of hope for humanity and built upon reason and diplomacy Star Trek is best when the budget is limited, and the focus is on characters and dialogue. Any episode of TNG can be built on 15 different topics that the show encompassed. All of which were important and earnest. New Trek is about violence and marvel-esque villains. I cannot sadly say I'm a Star Trek fan anymore as the show is unrecognizable. At Least Voyager and Enterprise tried to keep with Roddenberry's vision of hope for mankind. Incredible show. Glance at a viewing guide if you are starting it for the first time. The show really starts at S2-3, but S1 is important.

Holds up extraordinarily well even today. Social/entertainment topics haven't changed much over the decades. Data and Picard are standouts and many of the middle season episodes are literally among the best episodes of tv to ever exist. Minus one star for weak seasons 1 & 7 and Tasha Yar (yikes-level acting).

This Starfleet sets the age of the lap of luxury. A galaxy class starship full of famlies travelling in comfort. Considering the danger of the known and the unknown? That made as much sense as sending a cruise liner with guns to hostile and dangerious waters. Though as a plot device with famlies onboard it should of allowed for many more possible interactions beyond the regular command crew. The thing is they never really did anything with the family option beyond Wes character. As for the crew well the Captain, First Officier and the Doctor are the least interesting/likeable characters this time around. The support staff like Worf, Jordie, Data added that much needed TOS comradery factor, but they are no Kirk, Spock and Mc'coy. Seriously the most interesting character was the non-emotional android lol. World building wise TNG tends to wraps up things a bit to neatly and takes much of the magic and tension out of confronting the unknown. Also the techno babble is no replacement for good writing/story. Yeah TNG is fairly watchable, but not a all time classic say like DS9. After a recent watch of the remastered edition of TOS in 2022 that show really highlights the flaws of TNG even more. Did nobody from TNG area read the TOS crew logs? Space is full of overpowering aliens/tech, lethal diseases, deadly spacial anomalies and KYS prime directive restrictions. In TNG the wife or hubby & kids now come for the ride!? Seriously how was that even a sensible idea? Watching TOS in current day has diminished TNG as a bit silly in concept with a lot more lazy writing problems. I would still take TNG over New Trek any day of the week though.

Don’t go back to rewatch season 1. Start with season 4. Most of the show is really good, some of the best, most clever Sci-fi ever filmed. When it’s good, it’s fantastic. Problem is, you’ve gotta ignore the bad episodes. Each episode is usually self contained, so you’re not missing anything by skipping those bad episodes. This is probably a great way to introduce complex themes to a developing mind. Some of this shows values include the appreciating of all life, using words instead of violence, and telling the truth. I cannot recommend this show enough.

The original 'Star Trek' series had its flaws but was a ground-breaking and ahead of its time show with many things that made it hugely impressive. Expectations were high for 'The New Generation', with big shoes to fill but also worries as to how it would fare in correlation with the original show. Good news is that 'The Next Generation' is a very worthy follow up, that will please fans of the original series and also stand very well on its own two feet. There are improvements here as well as a couple of weaknesses. It is agreed that Season 1 is iffy and sees the show struggling to settle, it was Season 3 when the show properly hit its stride. Even for a character meant to be annoying, Wil Wheaton is very annoying. Production values however are a major improvement in 'The Next Generation' over the original series. The sets give more of a sense of awe and the special effects are slicker and more expansive. It is stylishly and beautifully shot too. The music has a lot of energy and atmosphere. Writing is every bit as great as that of the original show. It is entertaining, intelligent, thought-provoking and rich in humanity. The stories, when the show hit its stride, are every bit as high in imagination and just as suspenseful, intriguing and fun. Not quite as ground-breaking as the original series but just as influential and with many of that show's strong points, and actually with a lesser amount of contrived and lacking-in-logic episodes. Character interaction and development, in what is essentially a character-driven show, is one of 'The Next Generation's' best points and where the show particularly excels. Worf and Riker's relationship is particularly interesting, and Picard is just as memorable as Spock. Which is not an easy feat considering Spock's iconic status in the 'Star Trek' universe. Acting is every bit as fine, with the role of Picard containing some of the best acting Patrick Stewart has ever given and he has always been a highly dependable actor. Likewise with Brent Spiner, and Jonathan Frakes proves to be just as good an actor as he is a director. Michael Dorn is also strong. Only Wheaton is lacking here, but there is no acting here that reaches overacting depths like William Shatner in the original series. In summary, well worth exploring and just as good as the original series. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The absolute best series at using sci-fi elements to speak about modern problems. Took a season or two to really find its voice, but Patrick Stewart was amazing. Chain of Command, Drumhead, Darmok, The Inner **** many great episodes.

One of the most influential science fiction series of all times. It enriched the lore, gave us remarkable characters and good story arcs. For the lore: It added Q, the Borg, the Ferengi, the Cardassians, the Maquis, gave us insight into Klingon's and showed the dark sides of the Federation. For me it is remarkable that they always tried to show both sides of issues and did not shy away from moral dilemmas. Also they question the motives and solution of the Federation and society. While it is a remarkable progress it is not an ideal solution. The Federation is often arrogant, ignorant, trapped in their dogmas or ways of thinking and hesitates in situation were actions are recommended. Being the good guys/girls does not mean you will do everything correct or have solutions for all problems. Then there are the characters. They entered pop culture history and even if you never watched the show you have heard of them. Jean Luc Picard is the ideal diplomat with lots of knowledge and experience, William T. Riker is his right hand with significant backstories and character, Worf becomes slowly one of the best characters and in DS9 he reached his peak (He is often wasted to show how strong the enemy of the week is in TNG), Data alone enriched the story and has so much development and interesting arcs, Beverly Crusher is a fitting head of medical staff, Deanna Troi is maybe a bit overused as plot device but also an enjoyable character, Geordi is interesting and a good new Scotty and finally I am in the minority that enjoys Wesley Crusher but admit I also see why he is not liked by many. For the side characters: Q is one of the best additions to Star Trek ever, Miles O’Brian is sadly wasted and shines in DS9, Guinan is second only to Q, Lwaxana Troi is a well developed and played character and Reginald Barclay and Ro Laren are favorites. The character interactions, developments and relationships become a reason you return for a new season. For the lore they added many staples that were reused and continued. Alone the Borg transcended Star Trek and are wildly known. It is more than I can or will list here. A short list is already mentioned above. Story wise they handled matured themes, interesting stories and gave you things to think about or question your opinions on certain stances. The Borg, Q and final episodes are my must see recommendations. Especially the final two parter has one of the best ideas and conclusions in history for a TV series. There are of cause bad things. The first two season are commonly regarded as inferior even or especially for fans. It took a while to get started and develop the characters. This means not that it is garbage just a bit worse. Also some staples and themes were not developed enough early on enough or changed to fit. The Ferengi for example were thought out as new evil menace and latter changed into the extreme capitalist society. There are only a few overarching story arcs or should I say themes (Not a problem for me but for others). Overall a really good revitalization for Star Trek that spawned many spin offs or follow up series. I watched it for the stories, themes, characters and liked the humor.

Not sure what is wrong with the TV critics. This is one of the finest and most famous TV shows ever made. There's a reason everyone has heard of Star Trek... and this is why.

Went back to watch these old gems, after seeing Patrick Stewart try to destroy all his legacy. These are about a hopeful future for humanity and the universe. It gives us something to aspire toward, both individually and as a society, while still captivating the audience with great writing and character development.

STTNG is the best "Star Trek" television offering: very good to occasionally excellent acting; thought-provoking stories; uplifting vision of the future that is true to Gene Roddenberry's vision.
