By grounding this series in scholarship, Tom Hiddleston avoids exploitation of a well-known catastrophe and instead gives us a serious rumination on human nature under life-threatening conditions not unlike those we might find ourselves in today. How would we behave? we can't help wondering, as he gives us very relatable historical characters whose survival we root for. The result is pure inspiration: It makes us want to be like them, to care about others' survival as well as our own. I admire his passion and hope for more projects like it -- ones that humanize history. Maybe then we'll finally learn from it. And prepare.
