Outer Banks season four is charging ahead with a solid new adventure while leaning into the cast of characters these actors have honed and developed over the past four years. The chemistry between all of these personalities feels real, and there’s a creaky, spooky vibe surrounding their new mission that adds to the fun.

Outer Banks slots many of its characters into specific boxes and keeps them there. The series’ lack of nuance sometimes takes away from the emotional stakes, but it still does manage to craft a very exciting mystery-thriller with touches of teen romance. It’s a fun ride, but tighter character work would sell Outer Banks’ biggest moments much harder.

Though part one is notably less busy than previous installments of the show, there are still abductions, proposals, knife fights, and a corpse being wheeled around on a skateboard. (“Come on, how long were we really gonna stay out of trouble?” John B winkingly narrates an early episode.) However, if it stays on its current course, Outer Banks might just have found its way again.

The whole affair is kind of laughable, but the milieu — coastal country in the aftermath of a hurricane — and cliffhangers may pull in the youth vote. It has potboiler/”page-turner” qualities, and an absurdly attractive cast to build and audience with.

If you are looking for a breezy teen-focused series that brings good drama, the compass does not point this way. If you want guns, FBI raids, endless screaming, kidnapping, psychopathic family members, and murderous intentions at every turn… well, you’re getting closer.

The third volume cranks that absurdity up to 11 but instead of leaning wholly into the pulpy fun, it does something worse: It starts taking its messy mythology seriously.

I found it quite clinging yet annoying. Some of the decisions they make are excruciatingly annoying. You find treasure, you naturally bag it. when pope fell sick, they all naively went with him without leaving at least two of them to secure the Cross, to ensure what happened to the gold doesn't happen to the cross. Yet when they were stranded in the forest, two went to get a recue vehicle and some stayed with the van. You naturally stay with treasure, not abandon it after all the struggle experienced in finding it. That emptied reality from the story and left me angry. couldn't watch beyond 2/9. And how can you give a sick guy to drive you?

Frustrating in both good and very bad ways, the series doesn’t ever know what it’s supposed to be. Similarly to how a teenager doesn’t know what crowd to hangout in, this series can’t find its rhythm, jumping from mystery, to adventure, to teen romance all at nauseating speeds. But it does have its upsides. Namely, the portrayal of teen violence, familial abuse, drug use, and the sense of adventure (when it can get it right) makes this a mostly enjoyable ride. Unfortunately, it’s just very inconsistent.

This show has some good compelling moments but it’s continuously squandered away by convenient incompetence. The occasional screw up is forgivable, it is a tv show they have to build plot, but the never ending trail of building up characters to be smart geniuses & haven’t them drop the ball every time is tiring. The main cast are the second most compelling part of the show. I find myself rooting for the “bad guys” as they are for more interesting than the teens. Overrall I wouldn’t recommend this show, as when you get interested it will just let you down in the end
