It would be very easy for the remaining producers of multi-cam to leave that [dramatic] stuff to their more fashionable counterparts and just stick to telling jokes. Mom, thankfully, is a strong reminder of just how elastic this 64-year-old format is.

It’s a show that feels at once ribald and like a quintessential Lorre production (the second episode is titled “Thigh Gap and a Rack of Lamb”), but it’s also surprising in its emotional relevance and thematically astute in filtering enormously difficult social issues--from domestic violence to addiction to classism--into a ridiculously watchable modern sitcom.

I've watched the show more than any other show. I've watched almost every season around four or five times. The season they made during Covid killed this show. The pandemic killed Mom. When I want to laugh, I put this show on.

I'm a guy who really doesn't like chick-flicks, romances, or most comedies and sitcoms for that matter. If you were to bet I wouldn't like this show before seeing it, I'd have bet right along with you. But we both would have lost our money. I don't know how I started watching this; maybe it was half of episodes on regular broadcast while thinking there wasn't anything else on (and hey, that Anna Faris girl looks cute). But slowly, I began to get **** into the lives of these women, and I found myself resonating to things I had no idea would. Every lady on the show is a former alcoholic and drug addict, and become friends through their association in AA. AA plays a big part in their lives and many episodes revolve around their struggles, mess-ups, and victories in trying to conquer those aspects of their past lives which were all terrible (I have a greater respect for AA as a result). They wouldn't improve as they do though without the wonderful help of their friends who's connection to one another is one of the most special things I have ever witnessed. They are there for eachother in need, and in celebration; they are there in almost every aspect with genuine portrayals of love and care. I have never seen friends this close in any other show, nor connections so valued. Truthfully, these are not extraordinary things as far as human experiences go, but they are relatable, especially for people who may not have friends, or have gone through harsh times in their life. I'm one of those people; my life is a mess from past experience, and I have no friends. For a while though, I could watch this show and imagine having friendships as wonderful as these women, and I could be inspired by their everyday victories in trying to build a better life after a lifetime of failure through addiction. Some days, after watching, I would try to do better things for myself, if just for that day. I'd try to do something healthy, fix a problem that had been lingering, or go outside just to see if I can say hi to people. I don't know if I'm getting better, and I know I've been feeling a little less inspired these days since the show ended. But I have tried, and continue to try to be a better man in life, in small part because of this silly little show. I can't think of a higher praise than that.

[A] snarky-yet-heartfelt sitcom.... It helps that these barbs are delivered by authentically endearing pros.

Heavy dysfunction gets a backup laugh track, and it can turn mean. But Lorre knows how to wring dark humor from tragic circumstances.

A fun tv show that is stolen literally by the mom Allison Janney. Allison Janney is a tour de force in this show.
