It is very confident, and very good, and at 20 minutes or so an episode, never outstays its welcome.

Williams is adept at dropping in exactly the right cultural references too, whether they are for the 2020s (Only Connect) or the 2000s (MTV Base, Babyshambles), and in the later episodes the present and past interact in new ways. ... Rising above the status of mere light entertainment, it delivers an almost profound meditation on the agonies of growing up.

The overall mood is glum, particularly in the present day, but it digs deep for its ending. Don’t expect a rousing end-of-series spectacle, but in its own messy way, it finds a satisfying resolution.
