The Independent
The gallows humour, of course, derives from the grim situations the crews naturally find themselves in, leavened by some skilfully crafted scripts and superlative performances. It is a joy.

While the lack of laughs in the first episode is a bit concerning, we think Bloods still has promise because of the ensemble that settles into a good rhythm almost immediately.

The Guardian
After a perilously laugh-free opening episode (Kayo aside, who has funny in his bones) things begin to improve. This is thanks to some beautifully pitched secondary characters.

Now on series two and still a bit patchy, but with occasional nuggets of gold. There is quality black humour to be found here and few no-go areas.

A darker, more twisted sense of humour might have landed, but Bloods’ farcical, light tenor was hard to buy into while patients bled out in the foreground.
