Wicked

The plot is so rich and eventful, and the script so witty, that the movie doesn’t drag once the extended flashback starts. Moreover, every moment is eye candy. The screen bursts with whimsical costumes (by Paul Tazewell) and sets (Nathan Crowley is the production designer), and all of the important roles are impeccably cast.

Wicked is a well-oiled machine in the hands of Jon M. Chu. This film adaptation epitomizes what modern movie musicals can and should be, embracing its source material while cleverly translating it to screen. Tear-jerking performances by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo make the movie, playing to their individual strengths to bring to life the rapport between Glinda and Elphaba, who’ll go on to become the good and wicked witches of Wizard of Oz fame. If as many people love this film as much as I did, Wicked will undoubtedly immortalize the Grande and Erivo in movie musical history.

The film is effective at capturing what made the original musical so beloved, and in turn, will belong to a new generation of kids — those kids who might then envision themselves cathartically singing “Popular” or “Defying Gravity” on stage, just as Ariana Grande had as a child.

Hollywood finally delivers a worthy successor to The Wizard of Oz with this musical adaptation, starring the superb Erivo as Elphaba and a startlingly good Ariana Grande as Glinda.

All of Wicked’s best moments are still the ones from the stage. There are a lot of those great moments, though; certainly more than I expected. When Erivo’s Elphaba hits the soaring high notes in Wicked’s signature song, “Defying Gravity,” it’s enough to make you wish the wait for the second half of the film was only 15 minutes, instead of an entire year.

Wicked is as enchanting as it is exhausting.

This picture should have passed by in a sprint, not slogged past like an overlong, overbudgeted Macy’s Parade with Music that would test the patience of anyone, including that toughest PG audience of all — kids.

A Resplendent, Meticulously Expanded Cinematic Reimagining of Oz's Defiant Sorceress.260726 (3.1)Loving the original stage musical so deeply, I had initially given up on watching it after seeing the trailer. However, the courage gathered after all these years was well worth it; the elaborate, detailed narrative connections likely offered immense support for general audiences. Madame Morrible being played by Michelle Yeoh carries an impeccable presence. Nessarose's mutual spark with Boq blossoms from a shared sense of standing in the courtyard below the roaring crowd of students, unable to see anything. The matriculation scene brims with intricate nuance: on the day only Nessarose is meant to enroll, the governor coerces Elphaba into staying as her caretaker, and while wrangling with dormitory matron Miss Coddle under the governor's watchful eye, Elphaba unleashes her latent magic. Desperate to become the pupil of Madame Morrible—who only tutors the truly gifted—Galinda steps forward to host the favored Elphaba in her own suite, only to partition off a tiny sliver behind a wardrobe while calling them roommates in name alone. The collapsing courtyard monument in that moment exposes the concealed historical truth that animal scholars existed long before the Wonderful Wizard arrived. During "The Wizard and I", the visual choice to shift Elphaba's skin tone as she passes through shimmering colored glass mobiles at the degreenify lyric is delightful, complemented by her youthful vocal delivery. The erasure of talking Animals by the Wizard is framed through Doctor Dillamond, the last remaining Animal professor, who teaches how Animals were scapegoated and degraded through state propaganda when severe droughts caused food shortages. Empathizing through shared marginalization, Dillamond becomes Elphaba's first true friend, leading her to witness the clandestine assembly of displaced Animals who have been stripped of intellectual roles and hear the ominous warning that something bad is happening in Oz as Dillamond begins losing his speech. Fiyero Tigelaar, the Prince of the Winkies who converses naturally with his horse Feldspar, flirts with Elphaba upon their midnight forest encounter without prejudice or disgust, making her opening up to him far more convincing. Getting rejected by a woman for the first time leaves a profound impression on Fiyero, a frequent transfer student from the Royal Winkie Academy who popularizes the forbidden Ozdust Ballroom inside the library—an enchanting, rotating cylindrical space hosting Animal dancers and musicians. While Galinda cannot stand Dillamond mispronouncing her name as Glinda, she stubbornly calls Boq "Bic" to the very end. Visually, Elphaba looks stunning with stylish glasses and wardrobe, making the campus prejudice feel unfairly forced against a wealthy governor's daughter who blends naturally into the eccentric diversity of **** University. Even after being mocked with the pointed hat, Elphaba secures Galinda a spot in Morrible's sorcery seminars alongside a training wand; their shared, bizarrely beautiful dance at the ballroom sparks genuine reflection and friendship underscored by "For Good", bringing Elphaba to tears for the first time while also allowing Galinda to present herself as virtuous to Fiyero. When authorities arrest Dillamond and the new history professor exhibits a caged lion cub, an enraged Elphaba casts a slumber spell over the entire hall—instinctively sparing only Fiyero—and the two orchestrate the cub's rescue, sharing an intimate spark of romance that prompts Galinda to formally adopt the name Glinda in solidarity with Dillamond's cause. In a delightful homage, the legendary stage pioneers Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth cameo in the Ozdust theatrical troupe as ancient sorceresses, retaining their signature Glinda and Elphaba mannerisms. The yellow brick road toward the Emerald City originates from Glinda's own aesthetic styling, while the hot air balloon imagery representing Oz's longing for home and family appears attached inverted to the palace model during the soaring climax, poetically signaling the tragic inversion awaiting her desires. Adapting the sprawling narrative by splitting it into two distinct cinematic acts successfully preserves the musical's grand scale, character buildup, and breathtaking execution of "Defying Gravity", culminating in an experience far larger and more magnificent than anticipated.

Long disappointing, over hyped. what could have been a great movie was ruined by annoying songs and a two part story that I am not interested in the slightest!

This film takes the generational classic that is The Wizard of Oz, and spits in it's eye with character assassination and plot revisionism. Oh the WICKED witch that kills kids? Actually just a misunderstood allegory for minorities. The kind and nice witch that helped Dorothy? A selfish megalomaniac as insufferable as the director of this movie. Lyman Baum is rolling over in his grave as we speak.

This film is average.I support the speaker. And I would add that dubbing in miuzikal is a total shot in the foot. Ariana knows how to sing and especially how to imitate other singers. Yes, she is great at imitating, but her ‘own’ compositions are very average. And her acting is poor. If it wasn't for her pretty face and her sweet charm, she would be singing somewhere at a fair in Alabama.Besides, the film is very disturbed. It touches on many taboo subjects which should never be part of a children's film.
