What saves “Tiny Fugitives” from the dustbin of post-Apatow mediocrity is the underlying sweetness that cuts, like a glass of Manischewitz, through all the acid.

This absconding plot is pretty thin, but the film’s constituent parts are strong, including the muscular score by Joseph Stephens, great-looking title treatments and Knoxville’s performance, which is funny, physical and surprisingly touching.

Co-screenwriters Lewen and Jacob Kaplan have written some very funny lines and also inject a surprising level of sweetness into the proceedings, even making Knoxville’s character ultimately far more sympathetic and likable than he initially appears.

Tiny Fugitives has some sweet moments in its tale of a group of kids who decide they want to live at sleepaway camp forever, but the film doesn’t quite know what it wants to be.
