The Yellow Handkerchief tells a timeless fable, and tells it extremely well.

This trio of losers somehow forms a kind of loony family. Like the one in "Little Miss Sunshine," which also used the metaphor of a broken-down car to drive home its point, the interpersonal dynamics are out of whack, but not unworkable.

Following the 1971 column and the 1977 movie, this is the one of good remake movies.

The four main actors in The Yellow Handkerchief give good performances, with William Hurt standing out. They're the main reason to see this movie. The plot is fairly straightforward, dealing with self-improvement and the connections that develop between strangers. The work is decent but predictable, and that's probably the biggest reason why this film is basically an obscurity because it's a story that doesn't take enough risks to appeal to a wider audience. It's another one of those indie films too safe to work outside of a niche that eventually forgets them after a while as well.

As for the yellow handkerchief of the title, I'd have dismissed it as a cheesy device if it weren't for the fact that I'm still cherishing the eloquence of Hurt's silent marvel when he finally sees it, fluttering across the gray Southern sky.

The Hollywood Reporter
Four terrific performances make the transition to a U.S. setting go smoothly for British director Udayan Prasad.

Boxoffice Magazine
The romantic drama earns solid marks for atmosphere, moving shots of post-Katrina New Orleans and acting.

Chicago Reader
Drawn to these fumbling kids, Hurt gradually opens up about his one great, tragic love (Maria Bello), but any catharsis is circumvented by his floundering costars and their risibly cornpone dialogue.

Sluggish. Torpid. Boring. Those three words (and more) can describe The Yellow Handkerchief, a stultifying road trip movie whose inept screenplay is only partially counterbalanced by a trio of nice performances.

OMG YAWN. How can anyone watch this BS? Seriously bad 2 dimensional characters. Obvious storyline about as unoriginal as gets! There is not one single drawcard that makes this in any way memorable or even makes you care what you watched 10 seconds ago let alone care to watch until the end. LEFT before it finished out of sheer BOREDOM!
