The canon of Alzheimer’s films doesn’t lack for performances piled up with compassion and fine-grained observation, from Iris all the way to Still Alice. But as their faded Winnebago wends its way to the coast, Ella and John show there’s room for two more.

When a sunset romance does come along, you can’t help but root for it. Which is why it gives me no joy to report that The Leisure Seeker is pretty disappointing.

I don't think anyone should review this movie unless they're over 60. That's because that's the age when you start realizing that you need to start thinking about dying. But then you realize you have no control over it...most of the time. So in order to get something out of this movie, you must understand it. This movie tries to find an answer, and for that, it's well worth watching the final adventure of an older couple who don't have much time left. It's not a feel good movie, although it has many light hearted moments. It's a well-written, well-acted movie about the reality of end of life.

Leisure Seeker leans heavily on the charm of its two veteran leads. Sutherland and Mirren work hard to establish John and Ella as a couple worth pulling for, even as we begin to suspect that what they want is to go out on their own terms.

There’s beauty here — Virzi is too humane to make a movie without beautiful moments. But a scattered eight or 10 minutes of splendor just isn’t worth an almost two-hour investment of time.
