I mean, I’m sure we’re all sort of reflecting on this film through a posthumous lens. James VDB was very good in this part. A shame he was so ill and gone before this film had a chance to gain momentum. The plot was spread a bit thin, but this was still a good story on truth and how corrupt the system actually is!! .. and what not.

Dialogue, quirky incidents and a general acceptance that this is the unfortunate way life is make this more than just a genre exercise, though hardly a breathtaking grabber of “Get Out” proportions.

The Gates is an uninspired crime thriller that falls short of its potential because it takes a detour into some laughably bad plot developments. This unrealistic movie also mishandles its intent to have socially conscious messaging about racism and classism.
