Hmm. This was different and twisted, to say the least. I didn't quite understand what was happening until the end. It's one of those movies you need to look up afterward for an explanation, which I generally dislike. I gave it a few points for originality and Fargo-type vibes.

Despite its notable weaknesses, especially when it comes to its budget, The Deeper You Dig is more effective than I could have hoped for. Its plot itself is not really spectacular or unfamiliar, but it has a dark, engrossing tone that manages to keep you hooked because while its mystery is exposed, the interesting thing is to see where it leads and how it will end. That's a lot better than wracking your brains trying to figure out what the hell is going on without a lot of style involved. Like a lot of artsy horror films are doing these days.

I recently discovered their films when I had Knuckle Jack sitting in my watchlist for too long and decided to finally watch it. I immediately liked it and knew there was something very special about these actors, who, at the time, I had no idea that they were also the filmmakers. After being blown away by Knuckle Jack, I craved more, so I looked up Wonderwheel Productions, Toby Poser and John Adams (and later, LuLu and Zelda Adams) and I enthusiastically soaked up all of their other films one by one; Halfway To Zen, then Rumblestrips, The Shoot, and last but not least, The Deeper You Dig. The Deeper You Dig was a bit different than their other films. This one had more of a twisted, paranormal, what lurks in the shadows feel to it. There were scenes that were shocking, but not for shock value. I've found all their films to be entirely genuine with dark humor, realistic family situations and dialogue. If you're looking for sunshine and lollipops, you've lurked in the wrong shadow. I also want to notably mention the brilliant camera work, which I believe was the handiwork of their oldest daughter, LuLu! Awesomely talented family unit. I am by no means a film expert, but I'm defintely an enthusiast and I haven't been this excited about someone's films in a long time.
