By the time the ride is over, director Drew Goddard and co-writers Goddard and Joss Whedon will change course three or four times, nodding and winking but never losing momentum.

Drew Goddard's giddily brilliant The Cabin in the Woods has a lot on its twisted mind.

The stylish symphony of vivid carnage: A 5.0-star "sensational" subversion of cliches.2011 (5.0)I watched this film in the theater in 2011, and it was a "sensational" experience that completely overwhelmed my senses. It took every imaginable genre cliché and mixed them together so masterfully that I found myself lost in the "chewy" and rhythmic chaos of it all. The "vivid" and stylish depictions of slaughter were so sophisticated that I actually questioned if it was okay to be this entertained by such carnage. It felt like a "revelation" in cinematic flair, **** the fourth wall of typical horror or thriller tropes to deliver a "raw" and high-tension immersion that kept me on the edge of my seat. Unlike the "1.0-star traumas" of the same year that felt stagnant and hollow, this movie was 100% immersive, blending its "sensational" visual violence with a razor-sharp narrative pace. The 95% preservation of my excitement stems from how the film turned familiar elements into something entirely fresh and "visceral," proving that even a story built on cliches can become a perfect 5.0-star masterpiece when executed with such "raw" and daring sophistication. It remains in my archive as one of the most stylishly brutal and unforgettable theatrical encounters of 2011.

This is by far one of my most favorite horror movies of all time. The way they subvert your expectations and have created such a unique world in this is perfect. I have a personal dream that they start making horror movies in this world, but you don't know it's in The Cabin in the Woods universe until towards the end of the film when it does the big reveal. It will never happen, but it would be so incredible.

Because the first narrative is so crushingly generic (which turns out to be the point), most of the amusement derives from trying to figure out what the second one is all about. I'm not sure I ever did, but the climactic one-two punch of special-effects chaos and meta-movie chin stroking should have the fanboys trembling with delight.

A pulpy, deceivingly insightful send-up of horror movies that elicits just as many knowing chuckles as horrified gasps.

It's often funny and smart, but seldom deeply involving, and practically never scary.

Part "Evil Dead," part "The Truman Show," part "Arthur Christmas"... For horror hounds who love a larf, and those of us who always wondered exactly what that dry-ice stuff that rises out of the forest-floor moss is. A fun ride - but not quite a "Scream."

A creepfest so stupid it makes trashy slash-and-burn epics like "Humans Versus Zombies" and "I Spit on Your Grave" seem like Molière and Proust.

I am surprised at how high ratings this movie has - I mean it was decent, but I certainly would not rate it as high - it had some interesting concepts in it and was entertaining, but for me it was not as funny as I expected. Maybe it is because I watched it over 10 years after its release.

It is amazing on how so many people like this movie. In my opinion, the movie has ripped off so many aspects in films including the character personalities, and even escalates to obscure stupidity near the end of the film. The only thing that I can say that is good about this movie is the monsters themselves, and the makeup and CGI that went down to make them. But unfortunately, the downright stupid plot and oversexualized female and male characters mixed together with a horrendous plot brings this movie down in the hell it came from.

This movie was dreadful. Following on from watching "woman in black" and "Abraham Lincoln vampire hunter" the last two nights I was looking forward to this given all the positive reviews. I see it was meant to have funny parts but I obviously missed the clever tongue in cheek parody of the genre. I just found it very weak.
