Super Troopers

Mostly, Super Troopers is plain goofy.

With no greater ambition than reworking the Police Academy movies, Broken Lizard comes up with a winning formula: one part laughs to two parts goodwill.

A fairly sustained barrage of broad undergraduate humor and gross-out gags that should tickle young auds looking for unsophisticated laughs.

Puerile, offensive, degrading, dumb, pointless, insipid and may just well be a harbinger for the end of Western civilization as we know it. But I laughed. Sorry.

Fans of cheesy '70s TV shows will also be pleased by Wonder Woman Lynda Carter's brief cameo appearance as the governor of Vermont.

It's technically a well-made film: Chandrasekhar, who directed, gives it the look of a studio feature on a sizably smaller budget. It's just the script that betrays its cast.

Bad and tasteless. You laugh neither with it nor at it but rather sit counting the minutes while the movie laughs, for no good reason, at itself.

A seriously thin, mindless exercise that has no right being anywhere near as much fun as it is. The Broken Lizard guys basically use this as an excuse to wear trucker shades and sunglasses, then ad-lib their way through a dozen identical situations with a broad variety of results. At some points, like the "busted stoners" opening spot, or the infamous "meow" exchange with Jim Gaffigan, it's uproariously, tear-streakingly hilarious. In just as many others, though, the crew overreaches to stay in character and their quips fall flat. Brian Cox pulls **** Rip Torn impression as the strict station captain, but his officers pay him so little heed that it doesn't amount to much more than a gag role, and basically everyone else on-camera seems content to play themselves. With just the faintest hint of an arching plotline and a weird non-ending before the credits, this is best seen as a series of interrelated sketches and nothing more... which makes it perfect for fans of a particular attention-sapping intoxicant.

This film isn't a bad comedy by any stretch of the imagination, but it does not deserve an 8.1 (this is what it was when i reviewed). That beats four lions, a hilarious film and far far better! Nevertheless, Super troopers is a good comedy film, i think that round about the 20-30 minutes it starts to lose steam for at least 10-20 minutes but luckily picks back up and keeps you laughing till the end. The characters are great, and they play their roles great in the film with good comic timing. The jokes can range from smart, to crude, to surreal, to slapstick. However some of these slapstick comedy moments do seem a bit forced in trying to be funny, and end up dying flat. A good comedy film, but there are plenty others with lower scores that brings 3 times the laughs.

Super Troopers opens with a genuinely funny joke that had me belly-laughing right from the start. Unfortunately, the film never reaches that same high again. As it goes on, the humor steadily loses its quality, and there’s little in the way of character development or an engaging plot to fill the gap. It felt like I was waiting the entire runtime for the real movie to start only to reach the ending and go “that’s it?”. While there are a few good jokes scattered throughout, they aren’t strong enough to support the film as a whole.

Imagine you were forced to eat used toilet paper and wash it down with some pond water. The experience of that is like winning the Irish sweepstakes in comparison to watching this film.
