Despite its often-overwhelming nonsensicality, there’s ultimately something irresistibly fiendish about Silent Hill, which not only condemns holier-than-thou religious zealots, but also—if I understand its gruesome finale—seems to be firmly on the side of the Devil.

Silent Hill's main attraction, for genre fans, certainly, lies not in its plot nor in its characters (you could place anyone in this particular township and whatever might happen, you could be sure it'd be unnerving), but in its relentlessly nightmarish imagery.

The best horror and psychological film of the century , With the best acting and the best direction, the result is something more than the adaptation of Silent Hill videogame , With its often disturbing scenes, you can feel the torment of hell and be on the way to heaven!

Love this movie and it's interesting theme being based off silent hill video games, and it's Smokey Underground fire theme, being from a real underground Coal fire that happened in Centralia, Pennsylvania in the 1960 and is still burning now to this day and expected to burn for another 200 years or more, it's not filmed there just the underground fire theme it's based off, the movie is filmed in Ontario, Canada, it's definitely better than the second move, but I still like to rewatch them both in a row a few times every year, I watched it before playing the video games but there's lots of people that give it very bad reviews cuz they want the story to be exactly as the video games are, Happens quite often when making a live action of a story to get bad reviews but personally it's one of my favorite movies.

Stuffed with cheap effects and devoid of tension, this French-Japanese-U.S. co-production contributes exactly zilch to the rich film history of those three nations; the most horror-crazed teen may be hard-pressed to find any authentic thrills here.

Variety
In the end, Silent Hill degenerates into an overblown replay of all those "Twilight Zone" and Stephen King stories in which outsiders stumble upon a time-warped location from which there's no escape.

Entertainment Weekly
A few of the images are startling, but as Radha Mitchell (a good actress) wanders through a ghost town, searching for her lost daughter as though she was touring an abandoned movie set, Silent Hill is mostly paralyzing in its vagueness.

The Hollywood Reporter
Witless, soulless and joyless, it displays its video game origins throughout.

San Francisco Chronicle
Silent Hill has plenty of bad acting, bad dialogue and a confusing plot -- all of which become exponentially more painful when the movie goes on forever.

Taken from the video game of the same name, the film is quite beautiful and also quite faithful to the settings of the video game. Frightening the righteous and also very sad, perhaps too much.

Plenty of better horrors out there, but as far as video game adaptations are concerned, this one isn't half bad.

Aside from a few good scenes, this movie is nonsensical and abysmal. 28/100

This didn't need to be a two-hour film. It dragged on way too long at times and it just never sits right with me. I think they get the atmosphere right for the most part but that's about it. Sean Bean does a good job but the rest of the cast leaves a lot more to be desired, Some of the acting in this film more is just so blunt and straightforward, It was like they just couldn't put forth the effort to convey any sense of emotion.
