Jonah Hill has directed and co-written an impressive little movie with “Outcome.” It could be called a Hollywood satire, but what’s striking about it — and audacious and unexpected — is that it’s dramatic and heartfelt. Here and there, it even comes close to being sentimental.

A generally brittle, distant affair, Outcome largely saps Reeves of his genial, unaffected charisma, leaving him to play the carapace of a man who’s lost any real sense of who he is when not in character.

I don’t think this was as bad as what a lot of people are saying. It has sort of an “artsy” undertone to it and I kinda liked that. It had a decent enough story to follow along with, but the performances seemed flat, like each character and scene never truly met its full potential.

Keanu Reeves plays a fictional movie star who finds himself in turmoil after a potentially-cancelling video emerges. As suggested by his agent (Jonah Hill), he embarks on a journey to apologize to everyone he’s offended in hopes that it’ll stop the clip. This gives him a chance to interact with a bunch of stars, including Susan Lucci (as his mother) and Martin Scorsese (in an impressive turn as his former agent). Meanwhile, his best friends since high school (Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer) give him constant advice and support. Hill, who also co-wrote and directed, not only presents himself in an unflattering look, but creates a character that’s truly obnoxious. He’s assembled a strong cast, including Drew Barrymore (as her talk-show host self), and Roy Wood Jr. (as an advisor). They have a few moments of comedy, but more often, just frustration. This film has some redeeming aspects, but it ultimately is a sad sack satire that fails more than it succeeds.

It has a weird, half-finished vibe, with a lumpy, repetitive structure, a bizarre colour palette that resembles an exploding Tango Ice Blast machine, and too many scenes that wear on well beyond their natural usefulness.

Soaking up the one-liners and Hill’s antic but comically winded patter makes one wonder if even recasting the lead would have helped.

Sadly, there’s no trace here of the authentic fondness for his characters that illuminated Hill’s directing debut, Mid90s. Just a load of solipsistic L.A. brain rot trying to pass for satire.

Outcome—and it’s bad scenes shot behind obvious blue screen and fake, manufactured sunsets—is terrible. But what makes it memorable is the queasy way the movie keeps collapsing into the very pathology it thinks it is exposing. It wants to mock the famous for living inside a bubble of privilege, paranoia, and vanity, yet it ends up sounding like it was made from inside that bubble.

Jonah Hill had everything going for him: a timely topic, a strong cast, and Keanu Reeves clearly willing to poke fun at his own image. And yet, nothing **** film tries to be a satire, tries to be a drama, tries to be relevant… and ends up being nothing but indecisive. The jokes fall flat, the drama doesn’t land, and it feels like watching something that never finds its own tone. It’s curious how, even though it’s short, it seems to drag **** the end, what’s left is an interesting idea lost in the middle of a script that doesn’t know where it’s going. Neither the charisma holds up, nor does the premise stand on its own. And before you know it, you’re more tired than engaged—which says a lot about the final result.Translated with **** (free version)

Outcome doesn’t even be trying to say anything of importance and there aren’t even really any laughs either, they must have paid the all-star cast a lot of money to sign up for this one…

Any number of recognizable actors can't save this career worst effort from all involved. Insufferable and bizarre.

navel-gazing vanity project. wouldn't you love to get this cast for your paper-thin roman a clef?
