Late Night

Late Night is that rare thing: a deft and intelligent entertainment that can touch on serious issues because being funny is something it never forgets to do.

At heart, Late Night is a romcom and like so many romcoms, the funny stuff recedes after the first act, as the plot and its relatability imperative gets into gear. Yet Kaling is very good at conveying the paradoxical misty-eyed idealism of those working for this long-running TV institution.

Don’t be surprised if you come out wishing that there actually were a late-night comedy show starring Emma Thompson instead of just a movie about one.

The film wants to be a puckish media satire and an earnest workplace dramedy about “growing,” and the fusion doesn’t always gel.

It’s an admirably fun and light movie about more serious issues of representation and equality.

Late Night is a light-hearted comedy with something to say and an excellent cast, that is unfortunately hobbled by a storyline that doesn’t quite add up.

The film lacks for the more lacerating, freely parodic energy of The Larry Sanders Show and 30 Rock.

Loveable movie, great acting. Mindy is iconic, Emma Thompson was great, following their workship & seeing what happened next stayed interesting throughout. Behind the scenes of what goes into a Late Night show is interesting to see the other side of the screen.

Although I understand that the social commentary of this story was lighten with a comedy tone, perhaps a little more plot strength wouldn't have been bad, however it works fine enough, mostly because the subject is pretty relevant and because of Emma Thompson. I'm sorry, it's not that Mindy Kaling does things wrong at all but Thompson is the one who stands out. There are cliches and it was to be expected. The plot structure implied it from the beginning but as I said, it helps a lot that the topic is quite relevant today and that despite the mistakes it never lets it decay and after all that behind the scenes atmosphere despite not feeling completely genuine, in this story is still humorously successful.

(Mauro Lanari) What this film has to share with "The Devil Wears Prada" is not clear to me at all. In Frankel's 2006 work there was a plagiarism of the witch Streep against the candid Hathaway, in this case instead we wander around the vicinity of "As Good as It Gets" (Brooks, 1997), that is, in proximity with the anthropological chimera that we are granted a some evolution of our character. A foolish idea so far always refuted but that the grace of script and acting evidence turns into a fairy tale in which for a moment it is comforting to believe.

I love me some Mindy but this movie really disappoints in the humor department. Mindy is waaaaay funnier and wittier than what she has contributed to this movie. Seriously, stay home guys and binge The Mindy Project on Netflix or hulu or whatever streaming network she's on. Now that show is the bomb.

Preachy unfunny tripe. Avoid unless you love wallowing in gender politics.
