It is slightly tamer than its predecessors, because our dudes are older now, a bit battered, having accumulated too many head injuries and herniated discs to keep upping the ante the way they usually do. It’s a sweeter film, more emotional and deeply wistful. However, that doesn’t mean “Best and Last” skimps on the derring-do, or the daring doo — rectal-related stunts abound, as expected.

There’s even a sweetness to the humble beginnings on display here, especially the extremely low-fi nature of the stuntwork. As gnarly as it is to revisit the 2010 Poo Cocktail Supreme, it’s equally harrowing to watch a young Knoxville get taped into a cardboard box and then tipped down a flight of stairs.

Montages set to Holding out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler and My Way by Frank Sinatra bookend the whole bonanza. You’ve gotta have balls and heart for these torch songs to land. Jackass: Best and Last has both – and isn’t afraid to show how they hurt.

Proves that nothing is eternal except the hilarity of seeing others hurt themselves for our amusement.

By any measure, Jackass: Best and Last delivers the most joyful and beautifully bittersweet entertainment of the summer, reminding longtime fans and lucky newcomers of the sublime pleasures of horseplay — especially when orchestrated by experts, daredevils, or just the very, very stupid.

Best and Last works as a celebration, an introduction, and an encore.

Even if the film consists primarily of reheated material, the cast and crew still know how to make it feel warm and welcoming.

Little in the film stings as much as the fact that Knoxville and co. have clearly lost a step. It’s a bummer that Knoxville himself is too banged up to get involved to the same degree that he once did, and though some of the new bits reflect the visionary idiocy of the crew’s finest work (Larry the robot is a brilliant addition to the cast), many of them fail to leave a mark.

While “Forever” hinted at a timelessness for the “Jackass” team, “Best and Last” feels more finite, a recognition that all good things must end, and a reminder that sometimes it takes a fearless kind of genius to be this dumb.

Time and time again, we’ve heard from Johnny Knoxville that this is the end of “Jackass.” Yet this time, it’s never felt more genuine coming out of his mouth. This sentiment runs throughout “Best and Last,” as it’s the little moments that make this film really feel like a door is closing not only for these guys’ lives but also for those who have watched them all this time.
