It Ends with Us

Anchored by a mighty Blake Lively, It Ends with Us brings Colleen Hoover's story to smartly cinematic and tremendously touching life.

'It Ends With Us' is a sensitive depiction of abuse and its performances elevate the adaptation.

Lively does her best to add emotional layers to Lily so we see her internal growth, but this process is often hampered by the film around her.

The life lessons being taught here about self-acceptance, self-love and self-worth might be a little pat and some of the darker elements could have afforded a tad more darkness, but It Ends with Us leads with heart first, everything else later. It’s a film of huge, sometimes hugely unsubtle, emotion but it has an effectively forceful sweep to it.

For a story centered on childhood trauma, domestic violence, and the cycle of abuse, these themes feel like afterthoughts when they could have been its strength. It’s certainly lacking, but hearts were in the right place.

The result is a visual headache, overcrowding every frame with colour, texture and patterns, rather than building to some carefully orchestrated tension.

It Ends with Us is in deep solidarity with its source material when it comes to constructing a work that is uniquely bland and unmemorable.

Justin is the movie focus stealer in this film by far. With consideration to everything he brought to bringing it up off the ground and the chemistry he pours into his role I was left in unexpected awe! It was easy to see how Lily overlooked many of the red flags exhibited before her with the various degrees to which she is pursued and by her new employee and closest friends sibling. I feel that Justin hit the ball out of the park with this and that Blake Lively is good in her role as Lily but the tension and the underlying uncertainty yet provocative magnetism between these two translates well to a palpable attraction and the stakes by which Lily falls onto her deeply winding spiral with her seemingly ideal **** when Brandon Skelnar comes into the picture as Lily's ex from childhood the stakes rise. There was line that hit my heart so hard where he tells her if she ever feels like falling in love again, to fall for him that completely sent me beaming with adoration.

It was my wife's turn to pick the movie. I went along kicking and screaming, but it wasn't so bad. Blake Lively did a good job in her role. It's a decent Lifetime Channel kind of movie.

"Roots are the most important part of the plan" "Really? I didn't know that about roots, that's cool" This is all I will remember from this awful movie.

Going beyond domestic violence and toxic masculinity, on the oppression between the sexes I still prefer "American Psycho" (better the '91 book than the 2000 movie) and "Disclosure" (both the novel and the film adaptation, both from '94).
