I was so incredibly excited for this film. Both as a player of the game, and as an actor who was out of work during the pandemic. This was fertile ground for something incredible that really got to the heart of the Covid experience for so many. So my expectations were high to say the least. And boy oh boy was I let down. I do not understand how mubi boarded this. This tries to be some zany, authentic, pull on the heartstrings doc, using real people - but almost all of it is staged, and ends up becoming a completely scripted ego fest for the lead characters. The acting is terrible. They really cannot sell an authentic moment at all, and every attempt at meaningful conversation feels forced and cliched. And the reason I’m so annoyed about it is because the film makers are just so damn smug about what they’re making. As if no one has ever tried to make films in video games before. Machinima did it better, 15 odd years ago.

Grand Theft Amlet is horrible and I don’t know what drugs you use to enjoy it. It's just a 1:30 long video of Gta Online. It's not a movie, it's not a documentary, it's nothing. The HUD is visible, the audio is horrible, they could have made the session private and avoid all the problems they had recording. Yes, recording, because it's literally a recorded "gameplay" of Gta Online. I skipped to the end because I was bored af and see they won an award. I don't know what award is that I honestly don't even care, I just hope it's not an important award by any chance. I thought this was a documentary made with the editing softwares of the games, making it look like a movie made in game and it's not even that! You can find plenty of videos with better directing and atmosphere. Really, I don't know what you saw in this thing. The only way you can enjoy it's being a boomer that doesn't play games. And the thing is that on Rotten Tomatoes they gave it an amazing score

Though it feels prefabricated in its situations and emotions at times, 'Grand Theft Hamlet' takes advantage of the absurdity of GTA Online to build a story about a sense of community and purpose. The documentary is at its best when it highlights the dark comedy and inherent chaos of this virtual universe. A mostly fun social experiment that makes use of an unusual audiovisual product as a means of artistic expression.

not anything like I thought it would be like and not in a good way... I thought it would be descent enough to pay money for but not at all the case. I didn't even finish the wine I bought at the movie theater bar before the movie ended. I don't ever give a bad review for a movie but in this case I have ****'s not even a real movie... it's more like some people playing grand theft auto and talking on mics about how they want to do a hamlet play and yet they never do.
