Chariot

Chariot may not blow anyone away with its inventiveness, but it’s right at home in the family of darkly funny science fiction films that are enjoyable to watch late at night. Full of bizarre performances and a fair share of laughs, this is more than worth a look for those seeking an unorthodox treat.

The movie is also a strong spotlight for Salazar, a consistently fascinating and magnetic actress whose funny, warmhearted and ultimately inscrutable Maria represents the potential for meaningful human connection always just beyond Harrison’s reach.

From the cast to its odd, intriguing locations, Sigal was successful in assembling many of the right ingredients. Unfortunately, they lack a chef who knows how to properly combine them, whether that’s to create a meaningful sense of cohesion or to truly create the kind of beautiful chaos that makes Lynch such a mesmerizing source of inspiration.

Ultimately, writer-director Sigal's issue lies within his script more so than his directorial eye.

Stuck somewhere between puzzle film and quirky comedy, between imitating David Lynch and parodying him, it draws its audience in with the overtures of a compelling mystery only to leave them stranded in what is fundamentally a failure of tone.

How can we be interested if the movie we’re watching is as unimpressed with itself as we are?
