But the circumstances that lead up to this arrangement in the first place are quite astonishing-and efforts to write the biography are quickly stymied by e... Read More

Big Gold Brick could’ve been trimmed down a bit with a runtime of two hours and twelve minutes, and some of the characters, like Lucy, are not fully fleshed out. But overall, I enjoyed Petsos’ strange vision.

Big Gold Brick may be a bit too enamored with its own quirkiness, but everything Garcia does, no matter how outlandish, feels perfectly natural.

Everything and everyone lurches about in a desperate bid to be hilariously weird, and the effect is to make the proceedings feel hopelessly strained, as if they know that there’s nothing funny going on and thus must compensate via out-there quirkiness and constant mugging.

Brian Petsos’ interminable Big Gold Brick may be a film absent even the faintest trace of purpose or momentum — its endless parade of energy-less moments connected only by the lack of life shared between them, like a daisy chain of skeletons who are all holding hands — but the writer-director sincerely deserves credit for willing his feature debut into existence.

Feature-length failures as abject as this one are almost frightening, in part because one worries about what kind of a snit the director will be working out if/when he gets a second shot.

The lingering lesson in all of this is Megan Fox deserves better and Big Gold Brick is a solid turd of a movie.

No social, psychological or satiric point is made. No laughs are scored. And nobody involved will be slapping this on their “sizzle reel” or resume…save for the writer-director, who may be beloved but who may never ever get to make another movie after this “all-star” debacle.

(Mauro Lanari)
Brian Petsos' directorial debut, produced by Oscar Isaac and futilely rambling.

In my mind I want to believe that Big Gold Brick seeks to define and offer itself as something different, and that could perhaps be taken into consideration if its creator thought for a moment that it could mean something beyond its abysmal quality.
But those pretensions that I'm personally assuming, of course, were not achieved in any way. Big Gold Brick in a way is one of the most pitiful demonstrations of when a director clearly shows from where and from whom he's drawing inspiration and influences, but at the same time it shows a complete lack of identity and quality, because I can't deny that there is an idea behind this story, but judging that from what is presented here, evidently it only made sense to the director.
