Chicago Tribune
They're a witheringly beautiful couple; ex-cinematographer Stevens lavishes all his gifts of composition, lighting and texture on their closeups. [05 Apr 2007, p.C10]

One of the major successes of A Place in the Sun is the way it delicately obfuscates the distinction between romantic longing and personal ambition.

Variety
Stevens has mounted his production lavishly. Undoubtedly cognizant of the shortcomings of the story itself as popular entertainment, studio toppers have wisely permitted the film every possible compensating advantage. The result is a big picture in both concept and execution.

The New Yorker
Whatever one's reservations about this famous film, it is impressive, and in the love scene between Taylor and Clift, physical desire seems palpable.

Time Out
The chemistry between Clift and Taylor is unmistakeable – this is one of the great cinematic portraits of untamed desire – and there’s a compelling sense of unavoidable destiny, of a societal trap slowly, inexorably snapping shut.

Chicago Reader
George Stevens, a tireless moralizer and part-time embalmer of American myths (Shane), directed this melodramatic adaptation of Dreiser's An American Tragedy, and what does not seem facile in it seems overwrought.

A Place in the Sun is one very good work that has some great elements in it. Story here started rather slow for my taste but as time was passing I started to like this film more and more. Third act was most nicely done and courtroom scene was done in very good way. Characters were also done in solid way and they had some kind of depth in them. Actin was great from entire cast expecely from Taylor and Clift while look of picture was to nice to look at.

Tragic soap opera, stunningly photographed, and well acted by Elizabeth Taylor, and in probably his best performance, Montgomery Clift. Taylor has never looked more beautiful onscreen, so Clift's angst ridden choices to stay with his pregnant wife, or peruse true happiness, provides the guts that sell this movie.
