I really wanted for this series’ first worldwide release to be great, but unfortunately, Sword and Fairy 6 is just a bad game. It’s difficult to recommend the game to anyone with its myriad of issues, and that’s a shame. Let’s hope that this doesn’t discourage the developer and publisher into trying again, though, as there’s a lot the Chinese Paladin series has to offer. Maybe next time.

Sword & Fairy 6 felt like I had binge-watched 64 half an hour-long episodes of a Chinese fantasy drama TV series. Productions values may have been low and effects cheesy but the actors and actresses were beautiful and the story so gripping that I couldn’t stop myself.

Sword and Fairy 6 would be a fun but quite simple Chinese RPG if it wasn't for all the technical problems. The frame rate is a constant issue, making the PS2 quality visuals look even worse and impacting the controls, but there are worse game breaking bugs in here that make it impossible to recommend.

I went in to this not knowing much, expecting something like Gujian 3. Well I got a bit of a surprise. So I give it a 3, as the OST in the 15 minutes I played was really to a high standard. The dialogue didn't venture in to screechy immature territory and albeit really dated and bad I actually like the graphics both characters and scenery but it does look like it is a 20 year old game. Now the bad. Have you ever had an old PC and tried to play a game that needs a much more powerful one? Well that's what you get here. This isn't just dropping frames. If I had to guess I would say this maybe runs at 3 FPS. Smoothness doesn't bother me. **** runs low fps, I pay no attention but this is possibly the worst technical issues I've ever seen. We're not talking PS2 frames, we're talking Commodore Plus 4. The C Plus 4 is so old you reading this may not of heard of it but my games on that in the 80's actually ran smoother. The actual graphics are probably like PS1. This is a real shame because to be fair, this game could have been a beauty but it feels more like an experiment.

I usually don't give very many games a poor review or low score, especially RPGs since I generally enjoy them, but this game is almost unplayable and hard to continue playing and enjoying. The game itself doesn't seem too hard but the frame rate constantly dips making the game lag a lot. The characters move quite slow and I haven't found any option or button to let them run. The subtitles are too hard to see and go by way too quickly because they are speaking Chinese. Sometimes they're only up for a fraction of a second that I don't think the fastest reader in the world even has time to see it all in time. The battle is more convoluted than necessary which makes you only want to turn on auto-battle and not even worry about trying to figure out the battle menu. I get this game is a little older but even older games ran better than this and I tried coming back to this game at least 5 different times in over the one year since I bought it in hope that I will change my mind. I can barely get through half an hour each time playing before I just can't stand the game. So I'm done with this game and will YouTube some of the story and ending. Definitely stay clear from this game if you're looking for a RPG. Fortunately there are plenty of JRPG alternatives which are way better. This is a Chinese RPG but they all have similar styles.

Just as foreign films might be worthy, even essential, even though they lack the budgets and production values of Hollywood, so too does a title like Sword and Fairy 6 deserve to find an audience in the kind of player that is more interested in artistry and theme than how well done the button pressing fun is.

Sword and Fairy 6 is an unfinished broken mess that should probably be avoided at all costs. What should have been a triumph for Chinese game development is instead a massively wasted opportunity.
