A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

LEVEL (Czech Republic)
Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]

XC2, while managing to win me over in the end, with some top of class aspects, however, its frustrating game design choices and poor initial impressions make it so this game dosent manage to enter my favourite list of JRPGs. XC2 excels in its world design, deep combat system, and its rich cast of characters. The art direction is breathtaking, where the scale of its world is felt throughout, somehow managing to top itself constantly, pushing the switch 1 to its limits. This is paired with some immaculate worldbuilding, with its environmental and narrative storytelling, as well as densely written npcs spanning across all titans. The combat system is rich with player expression and deep mechanics, which remains satisfying and fresh throughout the games long playtime, which is no easy feat. The games characters and narrative, while starting off very tropey and slow, manages to get better and better chapter by chapter, with some amazingly written character arcs and plot revelations, culminating into a thematically resonant story, which manages to be very uplifting. As for the cons, some of the pacing issues previously listed apply. The voice acting and direction is also subpar for the first couple chapters, especially with the main character Rex. Quality of life features are lacking amongst this game aswell, present with the field skills, UI, quest tracking, and traversal. The games tutorial is also notorious for not introducing the combat very well. All these issues may make one bounce of XC2, especially before chapter 5 significantly ramps up the pace and stakes of the story, with characters forming actual nuance. I am thankful I stuck with the game however, as the rest of the journey gave me a truly memorable gaming experience. This game could easily be shot up to a 9 with a switch 2 edition, addressing some of the quality of life issues at a bare minimum, with hopeful thinking being possibly re recording some of Rexs voice acting in the early game, and tightning up the stories pacing in its first few chapters.

This game is pretty awesome! And compared to other switch games it's graphics are neat. The combat mechanics are fun but sometimes it just takes too long. The story was also a bit weird in some cases but other than that it's great.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a game that impresses by its size and its ambition. After more than 160 hours necessary to complete 100% of the game I can say that it is a gift for any fan of RPGs, being one of the most impressive games to have in the first year of a console. With varied and very beautiful music this game will guarantee dozens of hours of fun. With so many excellent qualities, Xenoblade 2 is a must-have game in your library and will make you little by little enchanted by these incredible characters.

Monolith Soft has crafted a game in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that takes the very best of JRPG elements and mixes it with some of the open world massiveness we’ve seen in titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild this year.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a phenomenal RPG. It's a truly incredible piece of work that builds and expands on the series' staples, while turning into a unique and heartfelt adventure all of its own.

Without being the game of the year, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 manages to offer enough good things to be a very decent JRPG game that is worth the attention of any Nintendo Switch owner, in spite of a few shortcomings like the awful clipping and framerate drops.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 certainly isn’t a title for those looking for a quick to play RPG or an easy to learn experience, but for anyone willing to invest the time there’s a gem underneath that just needs to be buffed out.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 — A true work of art in videogame form Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is not just a JRPG; it is a profoundly human experience, a monumental journey where every element —graphics, music, story, combat, and artistic design— blends together in perfect harmony to create one of the most unforgettable titles the genre has ever produced. Graphics that capture the soulEven on a hybrid console like the Nintendo Switch, the game astonishes with a vibrant and lively visual style. The Titans—those colossal creatures that serve as living continents—are depicted with poetic detail. The lighting, color palettes, and sunsets suspended over endless seas of clouds… every scene looks like it was taken from a fantasy painting.Level design: worlds built for dreamingExploring the Titans of Alrest feels like walking through living worlds, each one coherent, rich, and full of personality. Every region has its own identity: from bioluminescent forests to floating cities with majestic architecture. The design is not only beautiful but clever—hidden paths, vertical exploration, secrets, unique wildlife—everything encourages exploration because it all feels purposeful and alive. Concept art: the creative heart of the gameXC2 stands out thanks to its sublime concept art. The illustrations of characters, Blades, and environments are of exceptional quality; every stroke conveys culture, fantasy, and emotion. The anime-style visuals are not just decoration—they’re a narrative language that complements the game’s emotional and fantastical story. Some scenes, even before you play them, already feel epic, tender, or melancholic.Dynamic, addictive combatThe battle system, complex yet elegant, shines through its rhythm. It blends strategy, synchronized combos, Blade management, and special arts that intertwine like a dance of energy. It’s a combat style that grows with you: the more you master it, the more satisfying it becomes. Chain attacks, elemental fusions, and finishing moves are pure spectacle. An emotional, deep, and profoundly human storyXC2’s narrative is a powerful emotional journey. It explores dreams, sacrifice, identity, hope, the value of life… and it does so patiently, building a world and characters that stay with you long after the credits roll. Rex and Pyra/Mythra form an unforgettable duo, surrounded by a charismatic cast who bring humor, drama, mystery, and moments that truly touch the heart. Charm, emotion, and lifeWhat truly sets Xenoblade Chronicles 2 apart is the heart it conveys. The music moves you, the characters win you over, the adventure inspires you, and the ending leaves a lasting mark. It’s a game with a personality of its own—full of feeling, soul, and emotional resonance.

Fan service-y game. Gacha elements were unique but combat gameplay was too boring for me.

Cutscenes and character designs are cringe weeb s**t, gameplay consists of approximately 5000 convoluted systems that fail to interlock in any meaningful way, writing and voice acting are absolutely horrendous, and the game berates you with dumb tutorials every five minutes for ten hours plus. I really liked Xenoblade DE, but this is borderline unplayable.

After playing the absolute Masterpiece that is Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition I immediately went out and purchased the sequel expecting it to be not as good as the original but still a great 80/100 time with fluid combat and an epic large-scale story but what I got was a worse experience in every way possible compared to the original. Buckle up because this is gonna be long... First of all, if you like or even love this game and haven’t played the original on switch then I HIGHLY request you do because maybe you’ll be able to understand where I’m coming from. (This review won’t have story spoilers for the original game). To start, combat in this game feels worse, you can no longer identify which enemies are hostile or docile until you get close and see if they attack you or not. In the first game there was a symbol that told you so. The game punishes you for moving around an enemy in combat as you can no longer auto attack while moving and not to mention that movement speed in combat is excruciatingly slow making the combat feel sluggish. Normal enemies are complete damage sponges and since they're normal enemies, they're not hard fights. So, I always found myself in easy, unengaging and long fights. however, the boss battles seem fine to me since they actually pose a challenge (sometimes). AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON THAT STUPID GACHA MECHANIC! this game feels like its design to be a mobile game with the slow-paced progression and gacha mechanics. The story feels like a first draft accompanied by plot holes and unanswered questions. I would like to over them, but I want this to be a spoiler free review. Admittedly I didn’t beat the game (because I couldn’t stand the combat anymore) so I watched the rest of the games cutscenes on YouTube so I might be missing something important story wise, but I doubt it since I was over 80% done. To start, the protagonist (Rex) is actually the worst protagonist I have ever witness, he is a reckless baby that gets bailed out of trouble MULTIPLE TIMES by other cast members and instead of facing consequences or reflect on his behavior he gets rewarded by gaining more power to use in combat. Rex’s english voice acting is cringeworthy whenever he's in combat. it would've been nice if Rex's arc was about growing up and owning responsibility but nope, a baby biggening to end with no character arc whatsoever. Two more nit-picks about Rex, in combat he’ll sometimes UNIRONICALLY say “We’ll beat them, with the power of friendship!” Like come on. Also type in “bad character design” on google and guess who’ll show up. Nintendo must've thought they struck gold with that design considering its in Smash and BOTW. I also want to talk about the female lead Pyra for a bit. All I have to say is that she has a personality of a cup of distilled water and she’s the biggest waifu bait I’ve ever seen in a game and judging by the amount of Pyra profile pictures I see on YouTube comments and live streams I can say those people took it hook, line, and sinker. I won’t be talking about the over sexualization of women in this review but I what it to be known that because of it I can’t take the majority of the female cast seriously. So, what do I think this game did right? Some of the locations are pretty (only on docked mode) (and only some locations because a lot of them are drab looking). The OST is a banger, there are some side characters I actually like aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnd that’s it. Not to mention the numerous annoyances I decided to leave out. If you learned anything from this review hopefully it’s that you get the original instead.
