Not exactly ambitious, but it is expertly made, brilliant fun to play and absolutely fantastic value. [Issue#71, p.100]

The best fantasy looter on 360 (Sacred II included), but the lack of multiplayer hurts the package. [June 2011, p.118]

It was 2008 when Diablo 3 was first announced. That game was widely criticized for its "cartoonish" graphics. Torchlight was made to look similar to those Diablo 3 screenshots and was released in 2009. Until Diablo 3 came out in 2012, we only had Torchlight. This game is not a Diablo 3, Diablo 4, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, or Dungeon Siege. We do not travel to different geographies on a large map. Rather, it looks a lot like Diablo 1. There is a dungeon consisting of 35 floors, and we are progressing on these floors. If you like Diablo 1, this will offer a very familiar taste. Offering 15-20 hours of gameplay for one character is an enjoyable experience. They have created an adventure that can be played and finished in no time. However, instead of continue developing the game for a long time, they chose to release Torchlight 2 in 2012. That's why playing this for repetitive content may seem meaningless today. Don't have high expectations and you will get some fun. 6: Average - Some may love and talk about it, but nothing more.

I've been playing Torchlight on Steam, and it's good, clean, old school gamer fun. Of course it feels like Diablo, it's meant to. Heck, half the Diablo people are in here in one way or another. Love it though and I'll be grabbing it for Xbox as well. I only wish we could do multi-player. Can we?

It is a fun yet time intensive and repetitive game. It took me about 20 hours to finish the story (i didn't go straight through, I got stuck and grinded 3 Levels up to come forth. I played the game on Linux and it works. That's a good thing few games offer. Some funny quests, some boring quests and too much useless loot in my opinion. Sounds strange, but the reason is, that I liked to run around and kill foes, but quickly i ran full of inventory and then it cost me lots of boring time to sort out all the stuff that was equal or worse than my equipped stuff. So in the end I had to sell most of the things, first losing time to compare the loot. And that ist not that easy for the big number of variables that make the value of the gear. A help is the fact that on mouse over you see an overview of the equivalent you are wearing, and that you can already sort out some part of the loot from highlighting, so you won't even pick it up. But if you do so, you loose the money you could sell it for.

Anyone that played the PC version should be right at home here. In fact, the game is basically the same all around, which, disappointingly, means that the XBLA version of the game also lacks co-op. This is the only real downside to Torchlight.

Even without multiplayer, however, Torchlight on XBLA is as close as you can get to dungeon crawling nirvana for $15. Like its PC counterpart, it removes the cruft of the genre, allowing players to get right down to the loot-driven core with a minimum of fuss. And now, thanks to the streamlined controls, we get it all without the constant clacking of a mouse.

Favorite Cosole RPG since Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance. Wish there were a few more base locations. When you finish a quest you always go back to the same city, and almost always the same npc. Still gets a 10 from me though.

Torchlight is amazing!! If you love Diablo, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath, or any other hank n' slash dungeon crawling RPG you will looooove Torchlight! I have been waiting a year and it was well worth the wait. In this day and age I am not a fan of point and click PC dungeon crawlers. We have controllers. We have analog sticks...time to upgrade the formula. A must buy!

While Torchlight's original faults still stand, the game lends itself wonderfully to the Xbox 360 controller, and we found ourselves preferring the console edition. If you're looking for a hack 'n' slasher to lose a week's worth of nights to, then sit down - you've found it.

Runic have created a highly-accessible dungeon crawling game that's highly competitive with the best of the genre.

Torchlight is a highly recommended game for everyone that enjoys occasional looting and exploring. Even though a co-op mode would've been nice, this is still a lot of game for your hard earned Microsoft points. An insta-buy!

Torchlight is undoubtedly a bold and successful clone of Diablo. Because of graphical glitches and the lack of multiplayer, the game isn't a masterpiece of the genre, but certainly we are looking at a video game fun and addictive at the right point.

Torchlight is an awkward game to assess. On one hand, the gameplay is a major disappointment in that it's worse than Diablo II in every way, but on the other hand it has no major flaws and, even for a hater of easy games like me, gets addicting once the Shadow Vault, an unending postgame dungeon whose enemies are tied to your level, becomes available.

Frankly, this is one the largest content per dollar game you may ever buy on the XBox 360. The story is definitely lacking a bit and there's no characters to attach with but you won't notice because of the highly addicting and simple gameplay formula. Kill loot upgrade kill, and for some people, this isn't their thing. I get that. For me, I played this game for hours straight. The story is anywhere between 8-12 hours (depending on difficulty) and even after the story ends (at around lvl 30) you can keep playing in an infinitely long "shadow vault" dungeon that randomly generates floors AND quests until you reach the perfect lvl 100. After you've done that you play on a different difficulty or another character class altogether. The game just never stops delivering. Graphics are simple but stylish and the art gets the job done. Character progression is complete and satisfying, this game has good content and lots of content. So what are you putting that $15 bucks down on, hours of dungeon crawling epicness or a CoD map pack? That's not even a question!

Best game I've ever played. Also the most frustrating game I have ever played. I am a newbie to metacrtic. However I have played over 266 hours in Torchlight. The good bits. Quick graphics. Will run on fairly old systems with half decent graphics card. Originally I had a Dual core with a nvidia 9500gt and it ran fine in medium settings. Gameplay is fantastic. Story a bit weak but you really don't care it is just a lot of fun to play. This coming from someone who has invested some serious time into Diablo 3. No grinding (D3). Also multiplayer was a joy. The bad bits Guts and mods oh my word. Word of the wise if you just want to play a game when you get home from work without any tinkering or messing about then do NOT buy Torchlight. I remember trying to connect to a friend at around 09:45pm come 12:30am we had still not connected and gave up playing. A few people will disagree, however if you want to play multiplayer with one or more friends and you want to try out different mods. It is a joke. Restarting mods and restarting the game are a very common occurrence. If you want to play single player with mods etc then fine 10/10. However this game I think should have released the synergies mod as a dlc and not as a community workshop ongoing project. Summary Torchlight 2 10/10 best game ever Torchlight 2 synergies/guts bells whistles etc.

Very fun dungeon crawler. Lots of enemies, loot, spells, character customization is all there and very well executed. But no co-op? Really? That blew me away as I thought that was mandatory by now for all dungeon crawling hack and slash types. Good game but if they would have added co-op it would have been great. I guess we will have to wait and see if Torchlight 2 can do it right.

Why a gave a 4? Well i will copy the text I sent to the customer-support of runic-games. Hello, maybe I am just a single customer but as I read in a lot of forums you did two big mistakes with the xbox version of torchlight. 1.) You totally screwed it up in a technical way. The Xbox can handle games like Gears of War 2 without major framerate issuses, but torchlight cant handle it? FAIL! 2.) Your idea of saving up the multiplayer, especially coop, is strange. In my, and many other games opinion you did that on purpose to ensure that everybody wo thought "man, that is a really good game, but i wish there would have been online coop!" is eager to buy torchlight 2. Furthermore you kept the console gamers waiting for over 1 year and what did you finally gave them? A sloppy PC conversion with a acceptable UI. Thats all you have to offer for console gamers? You know what? I'll save the money for Torchlight 2 and spend it on Dungeon Hunter Alliance / Dungeon Siege 3 / Diablo 3. To satisfy my "coop-hunger" I'll play DIABLO 1 on PSX, because this game managed to implement a coop mode!
