The Life & Suffering of Prince Jerian is a sorrowful tale about managing a society and the surprisingly awful burden being a leader can be. I guess no one wins in the Empire, and that’s how I like my stories. Compared to its predecessor, LSPJ feels weightier and grander simply by virtue of the character you’re playing, but the game feels beefier, as well. Still, this title isn’t for everyone, as the commitment that could lead to a less-than-fortuitous end may frustrate those who disagree with the design choices, but I think these endings teach us something about forcing our will and neglecting the totality of people in society. Creating a harmonious society clearly isn’t as simple as one might expect. Fortunately, we can always reload chapters and fiddle with our decisions until we get the outcome we want.

Wow. The writing in this game is so good that it managed to make me feel every emotion possible. I genuinely didn't think they could top the first game so going into this, I was mostly expecting more of the same. Somehow they managed to expand on it without losing what made the first game so special. Well, the scope is bigger and the decisions are heavier, and of course all of that comes from the fact that you are a Prince this time instead of a peasant. But they kept how personal, intimate, and emotional the first game felt and somehow improved upon it. I found myself thinking about my decisions even after I stopped playing, which is probably the biggest compliment I can give to the writing. I chuckled, cried, felt anger, happiness, despair, anxiety, overwhelm, hopelessness... you name it, I felt **** really feel like a Prince being pulled in every direction, knowing that even the smallest decision shapes the empire. They reveal several key pieces of lore here, which I found interesting and refreshing given the scope of the first game. However, we can also reshape every aspect of the world here. I think allowing for such radical changes will likely make things very difficult for the developers if they decide to make a new game, which I hope they do. It's also nice that they picked the ending I got in the first game as canon. I guess I got **** soundtrack does its job, though it’s nothing crazy. My only issue is the artwork. It’s clear they used AI, which is a little disappointing. An AI disclosure or a future patch to change the artwork would be a great step forward. Also, the pages could definitely use a lot more artwork. If you're gonna use AI for the artwork, you might as well plaster it all over the book, right?Overall, they absolutely outdid themselves here, which I thought would be really difficult. The world of this game is so **** up and cool that I would love to see it as a 3D RPG one **** the Elder's Love grace us all.

This game was fun to play. I enjoyed it a lot which is no surprise as I enjoyed the first game very much too. I guess the concern someone might have is what improvement can be made from the previous game considering its a very straight-forward game mechanic-wise.
I feel they mostly delivered on that front and did it in an organic way where the world and characters justified the changes around using the new blood tide and sanity beads mechanics.
I also like the story and how they fleshed out this world a bit more. I hope there is more to come and I think there still is plenty of stories to be told in this world.
This game is definitely for fans of the first game, lovers of RPGs that lean heavily on consequence of choices and lovers of visual novels and anything that has fantasy elements.
I can't quite describe it but there is something that feels a bit different with Prince Jerian the game compared to Sir Brante the game. To be fair I haven't quite gone back to do an in-depth comparison but there is just something that doesn't quite hit the same. It doesn't make Prince Jerian worse per se but something I think is fair to acknowledge.
Also there is discourse around AI use when I played this game at launch. Tbh I am not so sure about it and I cant remember seeing anything on the page about it at launch time. At the time of uploading this review that may have changed. Something to consider if you're against AI use in your art and entertainment.
I highly recommend you up the first game too if you like Prince Jerian.
My actual rating for Prince Jerian would be a 7.5 but due to Metacritics system it will have to round down to 7.
