Although SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed remains truthful to its predecessor, it relies on it a little too much. The core, fun gameplay is still there, but so are many of characters and maps. While it tries to modernize the classic formula of the original, it fails on the new additions it brings.

Ultimately, Speedrunners 2: King of Speed is more excellent gameplay buried beneath a collection of unnecessary additions. The classic competitive platforming is still fantastic, and if all you want is more Speedrunners but prettier, then there is absolutely fun to be had here. It’s just a shame that so much of the new content feels like it distracts from, rather than improves upon, what made the original such a brilliant little multiplayer game in the first place.

Like the first one, it comes with a solid concept that I do not think it executes very well. The campaign for one, while I am glad it is there, it is a 2 hour snooze fest. Not much of note there and the CPUs can be super annoying. But, my main complaint is the mechanics. The techniques it shows you in advanced tutorials specifically are not fun to use. The baseline stuff, like grappling for momentum is fun, but that is about it. The little bunny hops + slide + jump stuff, is not fun to do. But if you play online, you have to do this to compete. Also, the whole same screen aspect I do not like. The main elimination mode sets you all on one course, one screen. If you fall behind and get out of frame or if the first place person gets out of frame in front, last place is out. Then it squeezes the screen tighter and tighter until just one person is left. In concept this is fine, but in practice is a nightmare. You basically have to memorize all the tracks, as being in first place is incredibly frustrating. You have no screen ahead to look out so you have to remember the track and what was ahead like a jump wall or boxes, etc. I get that it is made intentionally this way to slow that person down and let others catch up, but it is not a fun mechanic. Playing online is more fun since there is human error, unlike the CPU, but all the mechanics that are no fun are still there too.
