SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs
It’s easily said that SOCOM is the best console based tactical shooter ever, and it wins that throne quite handedly.
After playing online, say goodbye to your social life, and also the 12 mission single-player attempt.

One of the greatest features of this game, by far, the headset lets you tell your computer-controlled teammates exactly what to do...makes SOCOM such an innovative title. [Oct 2002, p.28]

SOCOM: U.S.

Favorite game of all time. Wish they would do an HD version, but after 23 years, now it's never going to happen.

For weeks, it's been the only game I've really wanted to play...The play experience is slow-paced, methodical and insanely tense. [Sept 2002, p.28]

While the graphics engine may have a few rough edges, they don't detract from the great stealth action. If you can forgive the spotty AI, you will enjoy the challenge the game provides.

Possibly the best reason to own a PS2 network adapter. The team-based miliary tactics work better online than off. [Feb 2003, p.93]

The game manages to blend accessibility with depth perfectly, whilst the level of immersion brought about by using the headset is at times unbelievable.

Technically the game gets many things right, besides the faulty AI. The graphics overall may be subpar, but the animations are done well.

If you're adept with the Medal of Honor/Halo style control scheme then by all means prove us wrong and shake your weary fists at us in combat, but if you're uncertain then we recommend you try it out before committing, or simply wait for SOCOM 2.

The whole reason I got in to gaming, THIS GAME! Socom is simply the best game of all time. Campaign gave you reasons to play it, to unlock things for multiplayer. Multiplayer was amazing for their maps and having to be tactical. No of this run and gun bull crap you see now a days. You actually had to work as a team to draft the other team. After each round, you switched sides and each side had their own unique set of guns and character skins. Desert glory, frost fire ruins... iconic iconic iconic maps. If this game were remastered for PS4, I'd never play another game after. Simply the greatest of all time.

Offering a fresh unique perspective on military games, this game offers probably the most creative option I've seen: what do I want my 3 allies to do for me? Well you can open up a huge list of what you want your teammates to do. You can tell them to go and do practically anything you want which included verbal commands on a headset and online play with others. This was truly revolutionary and immersive which probably inspired COD to copy this in the future. The problem here is it can get buggy and stealth has way too many factors dictating your overall score. It's quite annoying if you wanna 100% this game. The story is simple here and the highlights are the options it gives you. It makes you feel like a NAVY SEAL. I feel this deserved more love at the time but nowadays it feels outdated but promising for a future remake.

Among all the socom games released for the PS2, this one is the one with the best gameplay and sensitivity, but it is the most difficult and for that reason I am giving it a score of 7 This game was the socom that made me the most stressed

A tactical shooter with loads of options to solve your mission, yet it fails in nearly all aspects. You will already see why in the first mission. Every NPC in this game is literally ****. One enemy can be shot dead from close range out of the dark, while another one is standing right next to or even talking to him without noticing. Although they improve their eyesight and aim enormous with every mission, they keep making hilariously stupid decisions. On the other site there are your teammates, not on yours, but the other site. They surely do not want to get in your way, but unfortunately they are completely ****, too. From time to time they will run into your fire, block narrow paths like doorways, or simple get lost and fall back on huge distances. If an enemy aproaches them in close combat it gets comically hilarious. Even if they are allowed to fire at will it happens that they just try to stare down the enemy, change their weapon and get a rifle butt on the empty head, to die in an instant. Another thing is that they want you to take a stealthy, tactical aproach. Unfortunately sneaking is tideously slow, lighting and sound of the environment is just rudimentary and going cowboy, as your mates say, is always by far the easiest, fastest and most promissing way to succesfully end a mission. The controls are kind of sketchy and unprecise and the graphic and sound design is ok for 2002. Already been undecided about this game in the past, replaying it i have to admit that it fails. The 12 missions will take about 4 hours of your time, if you just shoot everyone, without trying the tactical features. Fun for shooting up some muppets, but the game fails at what it wants to be.

This might have been fun when it came out do to the multiplayer, but now days it ****, the campaign's story ****, that is if it even had a story I honestly can't remember if it had one, it had the ability to be a great 3rd person run and gun shooter, but instead they made it a crappy stealth game where the A.I. is either completely oblivious to the fact that your there, or are instantly alerted the second when you make a move, the multiplayer was fun, but it's dead now, I honestly can't recommend this game to anyone at all, skip at all costs.
