Rise of the Ronin is one of the biggest "what if" games I've ever played.
The combat system is simply outstanding. Team Ninja once again proves they are among the best when it comes to action gameplay. Every weapon feels unique, and mastering Counterspark is incredibly satisfying.
The characters are another huge strength. Ryoma, Sana, Katsu, Okita and many others are memorable, while the Bond missions often feel even better written than some main story moments.
The biggest disappointment is the Blade Twin storyline. The game introduces it as the emotional core of the story, builds mystery around it for dozens of hours, then resolves it too quickly. It feels like a huge missed opportunity. With a stronger ending and deeper character development, this could have been one of the greatest historical RPGs ever made.
Technically, the game is also disappointing. Graphics are below modern PS5 standards, performance drops are noticeable, and some animations, especially horse riding, feel outdated.
Despite all of that, the game left a real impact on me. Few games make me think about their characters after the credits roll. Rise of the Ronin did. That's why I can't give it a low score.
Amazing combat, memorable characters, a fascinating historical setting... but a finale that doesn't fully deliver on its incredible potential.

Rise of the Ronin ReviewRise of the Ronin is Team Ninja’s most ambitious game to date, blending the studio’s signature action combat with an open-world RPG set during Japan’s Bakumatsu period. While it doesn’t reach the visual heights of some competitors, it delivers one of the most satisfying combat systems in the genre and a compelling historical **** in the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate, the story places you in the middle of political unrest as Japan opens to the West. Your choices influence relationships, missions, and certain story outcomes, giving the narrative a welcome sense of agency. Although the pacing occasionally slows because of the abundance of side content, the main story remains engaging thanks to its memorable characters and historical backdrop.Combat is where Rise of the Ronin truly excels. Every weapon has its own moveset and fighting style, encouraging experimentation. The Counterspark parry system rewards precise timing, making every duel feel tense and satisfying. Unlike Team Ninja’s Nioh series, the game is more accessible, offering multiple difficulty options without sacrificing the depth that fans expect.Exploration is enjoyable thanks to a varied open world featuring Yokohama, Edo, and Kyoto. Horseback riding, gliding, grappling, and climbing make traversal fast and entertaining, while optional activities such as hunting fugitives, collecting cats, and strengthening bonds with companions provide plenty to do. Some of these activities become repetitive over time, but the excellent combat keeps them enjoyable.Visually, the game is inconsistent. The art direction captures late Edo-period Japan beautifully, yet environmental textures, lighting, and facial animations often fall short of modern AAA standards. Performance has improved through updates, but technical issues can still appear, preventing the presentation from matching the quality of the gameplay.Character customization is another highlight. Players can freely experiment with weapons, fighting styles, skills, outfits, and builds without feeling locked into early decisions. Combined with strong boss encounters and rewarding progression, this flexibility adds considerable replay value.Comparisons to Ghost of Tsushima are inevitable, but the games focus on different strengths. Ghost of Tsushima prioritizes cinematic storytelling and stunning visuals, while Rise of the Ronin emphasizes mechanical depth, player choice, and more demanding combat. Players who value gameplay above presentation will likely find Team Ninja’s approach more rewarding.Despite its uneven visuals and repetitive side activities, Rise of the Ronin succeeds because its core gameplay is consistently fun. It offers dozens of hours of rewarding exploration, challenging battles, and meaningful progression, making it one of Team Ninja’s strongest releases.

I picked up this game on ps plus wanting to try it and all
I can say is I’m glad I never paid for this piece of **** .. the combat is straight up asse you have this stamina / ki gauge which depletes far to quick expecially when you swarmed by enemies and once its depleted you are completely helpless, you no longer parry by tapping the l1 block button like any normal game would it’s now the triangle with a counter spark which 9 times out 10 doesn’t work .. it’s a Shame because I was hoping for another ghost of tshumina/yotei type of experience and the game had potential.. that’s 4 hrs of my life I’ll never get back … deleted

By far the worst Team Ninja game. The graphic is really bad and the combat is very repetitive. Usually the endgame is pretty fun in TN games but here they made it horrible by making the deflect window shorter on the higher difficulties. The story is bad as it always is in TN games.

one of the GEM among all AAA game, if you like nioh you definitely like this or better , the open world concept is great , i had 90 hours game time and i loved every second of it, i gave it 9 because it was a GEM and i don't know why metascore is 76 for this great game, you will enjoy it just buy it

I tried to like this game, I really did. But the opposite happened. It feels loveless, repetitive, the story is weird, chaotic, you don’t really understand a thing. Gameplay is boring, stealth is so bad, it hurts. The boss fights are so badly designed. Just learn to press one button at the right time and you’re fine… I kind of like the graphics though!

It's a perfect game! This is also a undeservedly underrated game. I feel like someone figured out that it was bad to denigrate it, and everyone has been harping on about it ever since! Meanwhile, it's a great game, set in an exciting historical era, in an exotic location.
On the other hand, the characters are great, I completely fell in love with my own character, but the others became very nice to me too. They are right, interesting, you could get excited for them.
Graphics: the nature, the textures are okay, the faces are expressive and beautiful, the npc's and enemies are relatively individual. The voice acting is also expressive and good to listen to, I really liked the Japanese language during this. And let's not forget about the humor!
I think the combat is brilliant, especially for those who like Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo's combat mechanics. I really fell in love with it in Ninja Gaiden, and I loved being able to practice it here too.
Overall, this is a great fighting game that showcases an exciting era in a Japanese setting, with likeable characters to root for, a roving open world full of beautiful details, shrines and torii gates, blooming cherry trees, and snow-covered streets in Kyoto, and cats and dogs to pet.

This game shows why a great game doesn’t need insane high budget for great quality gameplay fun, we just want functional good designs for a video game!

Rise of the Ronin is game with a fun and dynamic combat system, engaging characters, and a surprisingly strong and serious story for a game of this type, it stands out as something special. The added options for romance and the freedom of movement across the world make the experience even more rewarding, resulting in a truly impressive title overall.

The moment I finally beat some of the hardest bosses in gaming, the feel of euphoria by Rise of the Ronin was unreal. Personally I create a female Ronin because you can only be a guy in other samurai games lol. Just felt like a different experience!

If this game would be called "Assassin's Creed", everyone would talk about Game Of The Year" material! It's basically a mix of Tenchu and Ghost of Tsushima! Yes, Tenchu! Is it al perfect? Let's start with the negatives, that its mostly for PC users. The optimization on PC is terrible! It **** so bad, that even the best 8GB graphic cards would have issues. And there is no common sense, because the graphics are pretty outdated! But... The gameplay, the story of the main scenario and side quests, the protagonists, everything is great! Different kind of weapons offer different skills and different gameplay. You can't basically get bored of this. Its pretty enjoyable. The game shows a historical period of Japan, basically during the transmission from "feudal Japan", the uprising against the Sogunate, to a modern nation state. If you can forgive the outdated graphics and can play it on a console or a PC with more than 8GB VRAM, this game will make you justice!

I think Rise of the Ronin didn't just use Japanese history as a backdrop, it brought it alive in an entertaining way. It didn't just entertained, but also educated. It obviously was done through careful research and have deep respect for the Japan's Bakumatsu era. The movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate being made into an awesome game! I still couldn't believe it.

You can’t trust reviews and ratings. Before playing, I read a lot of positive feedback and then spent several days waiting for the great game everyone was praising to actually start. First of all, this is not a soulslike (I know what I’m talking about) – it’s Assassin’s Creed, but with terrible graphics. Secondly, the story is dull with lots of uninteresting characters. Thirdly, the animations and graphics look like they’re from the PS3 era. I wasn’t blown away by Ghost of Tsushima, but I’ll say this: Ghost of Tsushima is a masterpiece compared to this. Atmosphere and design: 6
Story: 5
Gameplay: 4
Animations: 1
Graphics: 2
Overall: 4 I would have rated this game a 6, if not for the inflated expectations and deceptively positive reviews.

Play it !
Rise of the Ronin is a good game that could have been excellent.
The developers' work must be commended, as the game has very good content and challenging gameplay, yet is very accessible given the difficulty level. After 77 hours of play, I enjoyed it, even if some missions ended up becoming boring. The first flaw is the graphics quality compared to Ghost of the Tushima, which came out earlier, but you get used to it very quickly thanks to ray tracing. The other small flaw is the variety of gameplay mechanics, which doesn't allow for a real grip. The third and most important flaw is the impact of the choice of the hidden blade and the faction which was not assumed by the developers and which could have given real replayability to the game.

Underrated game, While graphics are dated, every other departament is better than ghost of tsuchima, the combat is deeper, traversal is more interesting because gliding mechanics allow more verticality in level design, and there are more activities than in ghost of tsuchima, yes, there are tons of enemy setlings to take over but the game features some minigames and combat is way better.

I didn't buy this game wen it released and that was a mistake. I foolishly believed the press and user reviews that this was a bad game. It couldn't be more wrong. This game is a true gem. The graphics are the ONLY let down but even the graphics are not bad bad. Where this game shines is the gameplay, the combat is extremely rewarding, the missions with allies on you side are incredible and the option you get to switch between the allies mid combat is amazing. I really enjoyed this game a lot If you like rewarding combat and are willing to get past the difficulty of the combat you must play this game. But, it's not an easy game, the parry window is extremely thin and the enemies all have different move sets, so there is a learning curve.

This is not a bad game and I think most of critics in western media come from the idea people was expecting something like a RDR2 based in Japan and the game is just not it. Graphically, they say the game is outdated, but I think it's being judged like Ghost of Tsushima, which is a game that has nothing to do with it. This game is more comparable to Samurai Warrior. The game is a Japan based game, made from Japanese people, to Japanese people. This is certainly not a western videogame. Rise of the Ronin feels like Tenchu or Nioh. Combat is polished, accurate, and well structured. I think combat indeed is the marrow of the entire game. The pitty are the rest of the things...Which I think got the worst part: Story is not quite there... Boring, repetitive storyline. You soon start to skip dialogues. Skill tree is irrelevant, was accumulating skill points until I realised there were 17points left to spend. You're don't really have to spend it, skills don't do any difference. While on the one hand, it's nice that the game is quite long (70 hours of gameplay in my case). The reality is that most people found this game absurdly long. And as I say, this is a result of the game's repetitiveness. If it weren't so repetitive, if it wasn't all about "moving forward killing everyone with swords," perhaps the 60 or 70 hours of gameplay wouldn't be something many people would find objectionable. All things considered, I think this game is a 7/10. And I think it deserves more credit than it got. It's definitely one of the best games of this generation.

After spending dozens of hours in Rise of the Ronin and earning the platinum trophy, I can confidently say this is one of the most immersive and rewarding open-world samurai experiences on PS5. Team Ninja nailed the setting—exploring 19th-century Japan during a time of political turmoil felt both educational and thrilling. The blend of action, exploration, and RPG mechanics is done really well. Combat is fast, fluid, and satisfying, with a wide variety of weapons and styles to master. It starts off feeling a bit familiar, but as you upgrade your gear and skills, the depth really opens up. The story offers multiple choices that actually impact your journey, making you feel like your decisions matter. Side quests and characters are meaningful, not just filler, and there’s a ton of content packed into this game. It’s not perfect—some animations and visuals could be a bit more polished—but the atmosphere, freedom of choice, and fun combat more than make up for it. If you're into samurai stories or loved Ghost of Tsushima, this one's definitely worth diving into. And getting that platinum felt seriously satisfying!

Im a big fan of the Nioh Series and I was already hyped to play their newest game. As expected, the graphics aren’t as detailed and realistic like a Cyberpunk orthe Last of Us but they were always Team Ninjas weakest skill. Their peak combatsystems, for which they known for, is again incomparable and complex. This time they tried an open world and in my opinion it worked. Even though mechanics like freeing villages (Far Cry/ GoT) or the skill point system (Sekiro/Jedi Survivor) are used in many games but still a lot of fun. Therefore why should you change something that is already perfect.
In conclusion Im sure many people wont play the game because of the graphics but it’s the same with any other game. You may come for the graphics but stay for the gameplay. This rule works for every game and is in Rise of the Ronin at its peak.

The graphics of this game was so bad. it made my impression bad from the beginning. I played through it but don't remember anything that was likeable.
