It's liquid movement... A massive improvement on previous console FPS control... Not only making excellent use of the Wii's controllers, this is huge fun in its own right. For a launch title to get so much right is an indicator of great things to come. [Dec 2006, p.70]

There are still some minor control issues, and the game is still incredibly inconsistent in terms of visual acuity, but in spite of this Red Steel is still an unquestionably fun game to play.

Red Steel introduces a promising control scheme both for shooting thugs and for slashing them with samurai swords, but wraps it in a buggy, thoroughly unimpressive game.

"Red Steel" is a decent shooter that feels unfinished. A launch title for the Wii, it can be fun, but suffers some technical issues. In terms of tone and gameplay, this is similar to "Goldeneye: Rogue Agent". Using the Wiimote to aim guns is pretty responsive. However, controls for the Sword Fighting are pretty broken. Also, at checkpoints, you can expect small freezes to occur. The quality of the graphics is inconsistent as well. The game also includes split-screen competitive modes. I would rate this with a 6.3 out of 10.

Id love to say this game was great, however, I simply can not. I have never raged quite as hard at a game as I did with Redsteel. The storyline is actually quite decent & voice acting isn't that bad either, the art style is quite different and honestly the shooter aspect to this game is quite fun too, it's smooth and fluid with satisfying shot sounds and vibration. HOWEVER, the insane sword fights with the broken janky motion controls makes some of the fights ludicrously hard. There was times where I was stuck on a sword fight for days and days solely because of the horrendous motion control read out. It registered the correct movement maybe 20% of the time. I tried 2 separate sensor bars and 3 different controllers & nunchuks, to rule out it being on my end and both times I got the same results. This is the first game that has ever made me rage out and break a nunchuk because of that.
So with that being said I would have given this game a solid 7/10, but, with the shear amount of sword battles you have to struggle through each stage, it drops it to a mediocre 4.5-5 PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

"Red Steel" is a decent shooter. It's fun, but the action can get repetitive and tech issues hurt the experience. Overall, the quality is more on the level of "Goldeneye: Rogue Agent" than the Wii remake of "Goldeneye 007". The levels are linear and feature occasional sword fights that are quite basic in execution. It's also too bad the game slightly freezes at checkpoints. The graphics are decent for a launch title. If you're looking for an enjoyable Wii shooter, there are much better choices. In the end, I would rate this with a 6.2 out of 10.

Clearly designed with the hardcore gamer in mind. It's slick, addictive and as close to "cool" as a game can get. [Christmas 2006, p.68]

It’s a game like no other, but it takes a great deal of patience before you’re able to truly enjoy it.

Red Steel: A Pioneering Journey into Interactive Swordplay. Red Steel, released in 2006, holds a special place in gaming history as a title that dared to innovate, delivering a unique and immersive experience that, in many ways, was ahead of its time. While it may not have achieved the widespread acclaim of some blockbuster titles, its groundbreaking approach to combining first-person shooting with swordplay makes it a trailblazer in the gaming landscape.

What are people smoking? This isn't a horrible game, it's honestly great. Story very underrated and the atmosphere was unique with this game. Yeah enemy AI was a little stupid at times but a lot of games has this problem.

Once the final credits roll and only the memories of your experiences remain, underneath the oddly coloured skin of different environments, controls, and concepts, Red Steel is very much a first person shooter like all those other 'normal' first person shooters.

It blazes a lot of new trails but doesn’t make much headway, and the traditional shooter elements aren’t done very well. The multiplayer really needs more depth, but hopefully the inevitable sequel will do it better, because I can’t imagine playing deathmatch very long with the controls as they are.

The enemies almost seem to know you’re at a disadvantage, control-wise. They’re far from the brightest opponents, often standing around seemingly bored when they have clear shots at you. This does keep things from becoming frustrating, but in this era of challenging AI in games like "FarCry" and "Gears of War," Red Steel can sometimes feel like a throwback.

What can’t be overlooked though is the poor dialogue and voice acting, which ranges from stereotypical to absurd.

A time machine that only goes backwards to the age when a glut of no-name shooters clogged the shelves.

People hated it because it had Wii controls and complained about the graphics, remember it was released on a Wii hardware. It was a great game. Gunplay is pure quality, story felt somehow unique, and level design was fantastic. The sword fight was also fun. Don't listen to haters for this game.

A rather generic FPS in a similar vein to Goldeneye 007 set in the world of the Yakuza. The sword combat sections feel a little tacked on, but it's well engineered and enjoyable to play.

I feel this game was like a Golden Eye 007 for 64 attempt while adding rails, the game is ok but it put me to sleep quick. I love the original 007 but this game is ridiculous. The controls are crap and i disliked the game all together. Deserves a 4 for effort.

An interesting idea. Just done poorly. The controls are horrid and the Wii sensor seems to have quiet a bit of trouble picking up the sword movements. I would not play this again simply out of sheer frustration, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
SummaryRed Steel is set in modern-day Japan. Players master both the ancient art of the katana and the sophisticated technology of modern firearms taking advantage of the emotion and immersive gameplay possible only with the Wii's unique controller.
