It strikes a nice balance between making references to the show and being a somewhat simplified “Gotta Cath ‘Em All!” homage.

Overall this is a surprisingly well constructed game and nitpicks aside, you owe it to yourself to dig into the game and ask why aren't there more big name Poke-clones out there.

Equal parts homage to Pokemon and fan-service to Rick and Morty aficionados, this one is well worth a look.

Pocket Mortys is a well done clone, packed with funny lines and characters, but also pretty repetitive and simplistic in its mechanics.

Pocket Mortys, like many episodes of the show, is a true roller coaster. It has a lot of highs, a ton of lows, and that may not appeal to everyone. For me though, I feel like I got my money's worth, and it made the wait for the next season of the show (which still has no set premiere window) that much easier.

If you can overlook the early game difficulty, Pocket Mortys is a freemium game that is never in your face about taking your money. With short rounds of gameplay and a lot of post-game activities, Pocket Mortys is well worth a download if you enjoy Pokemon and are slowing wasting away while waiting for the third season of Rick and Morty.

Provides a couple hours of genuine fun but if you have a portable device capable of running anything more complex than Pokémon Red/Blue, there’s no real reason to play Pocket Mortys. [03/2016, p.72]

As licensed games go, Pocket Mortys cashes in on the Rick and Morty universe in ways clever enough to keep it from being a cynical money-grabbing disaster. It occasionally makes clever use of its source material through references and in-jokes, but all of the callbacks in the world don’t make up for mechanics that’re a pale shadow of Pokémon, without enough original ideas or even new comedy to make it into an experience capable of standing on its own.

In the end, Pocket Mortys ends up being the video game equivalent of Pirates of the Pancreas: something that had the potential for an amazing ride, but is held back and never gets a chance to shine, doomed to wind up being talked about in unenthusiastic tones.
