Excellent combat executed with stylish flair. A must have for action game fans. [Sept 2018, p.90]
Nier: Automata Become As Gods Edition has a very deep and thoughtful story, but it requires a lot of time before you get down to it.
XBox One owners have no excuse to miss out on this game. It is one of the best examples of video games as a medium of entertainment and needs to be played by every person possible. I cannot stress enough how important this game is, or how good it is.

To some at first glance, NieR: Automata might appear as some weird Japanese hack and slash with robots and say “no thanks.” But that couldn’t be further from what this game actually **** tells one of the most powerful and thought-provoking narratives in gaming by exploring things like the nature of humanity, the search for purpose, finding value in life, what it means to exist, and the profound struggle of trying to comprehend these things. Its narrative is deeply complex, philosophical, emotional, and truly one of a kind. Yoko Taro, the genius director behind this masterpiece, is able to craft such a story that breaks conventional structures and challenges players to reflect. His unconventional, emotionally-driven approach turns what could have been a simple action game into a deeply philosophical and unforgettable experience. It's a game that makes you sit there and just think as it deconstructs philosophical ideas and reconstructs them into a new **** combat is fast, fluid, and surprisingly varied. The game requires multiple "endings" / routes (main story is endings A-E) where you play 3 different characters throughout them. The gameplay never gets stale as it constantly shifts styles while staying smooth and engaging.NieR: Automata also undoubtedly has one of the best soundtracks ever composed; nothing has or probably will beat it for me. Each and every piece of music in NieR's OST is incredible, which keeps the game sounding great and it elevates the entire experience. It's one of those OSTs that could stand strong as a standalone album.NieR: Automata is a masterpiece that I can't recommend enough if you can appreciate very good storytelling, incredible music, or creative ambition.

In spite of all the odds against Yoko Taro's career, he has finally delivered a true masterpiece that finally delivers on all fronts, including gameplay. Environmental detail aesthetics lacking aside, Nier: Automata is an unbelievable game and one that just might make even the most stone cold hearted gamers well up into a weepy emotional mess. This is a landmark in storytelling that is one that embraces the fact it is a videogame and does not try to imitate film like the way most story-driven titles do.

NieR: Automata is a unique and ambitious title that blends action, philosophy, and unconventional storytelling in a way that few games attempt. Visually, it delivers good graphics, especially considering its goal of maintaining a consistent 60 FPS on consoles—performance is clearly a priority, and it pays off with smooth, responsive **** story is undeniably intriguing, filled with existential themes, emotional depth, and surprising twists. However, the way it’s delivered—requiring players to "beat" the game three times to truly see the full picture—may not appeal to everyone. While the multiple playthroughs do add new perspectives and depth, they can also feel repetitive or unnecessarily drawn out for players who prefer more traditional narrative structures. That said, it’s certainly a bold and memorable approach.Gameplay is where NieR: Automata truly shines. The combat is fast, fluid, and satisfying, combining hack-and-slash mechanics with bullet hell elements and even platforming. The only real hiccup here is the hacking mini-games—some of them are surprisingly difficult and can become frustrating, especially during tense story moments. What really hurt the experience for me, however, was the final boss fight. It dragged on for far too long, with a nearly endless health bar that turned an otherwise emotional climax into a test of patience. Spending almost half an hour on a single encounter disrupted the pacing and soured the conclusion of what had been, up to that point, an impressive journey.Despite its flaws, NieR: Automata is a memorable experience. It dares to be different and mostly succeeds—but a few questionable design choices keep it from achieving true greatness. It's still a good game, but not without its frustrations.

I was lead to believe that the story of NieR: Automata would be life changing, and although I didn't quite have that experience, I still thought it was overall a very good game. I found the melancholic undertones of the story and music emotionally impactful in a way that you don't often get in western games and I appreciated that part of it. The cinematic spectacle of boss fights are captivating but often feel detached as the combat is simplified and the camera angles are constantly shifting in a slightly jarring manner. As others have noted the game has not aged well visually (aside from maybe the explosions). I like the minimal style of the scenery but some of the distorted textures have a distinctly PS3 era vibe. This would be the perfect Switch game if it was well optimized on that platform but it kind of looks bad on a Series X when compared to other games from the same era like Witcher 3, RDR2, Dying Light, Mad Max, etc. The multiple endings are cool if not slightly repetitive, but what is up with that little Pacman game they make you do over and over again?

This may be one of the worst games I have played in quite a while, it's an utterly tragic affair. It tries really hard to blend rpg, platforming and shmup elements into some cohesive story rich experience, which is **** it simply stumbles and smashes it's face at every step. The "platforming" sections are marred by awful camera function and instill a massive sense of pointlessness. The exploration is a waste of time in the empty, boring world, which can take an age to traverse at times. The general combat is tedious and repetitive, with next to no satisfying payoff at any point. Shmup patterns and controls feel amateuring at best, leaving anyone with any experience in the genre bored to tears or laughing out of despair. The only redeeming factor is the soundtrack, which is just wonderful. It's just a sad fate for the composer, that their talent and hard work is forver attached to this sad excuse for a game. How anyone is giving this 5-6/10 is confusing enough, seeing the 10's on display is just outright hilarious. Quite telling that they often never say what is actually good about it and just call it a masterpiece. Avoid like the plague, or just watch a longplay and play anything else. You'll have served your time better in the long run.
