New Star Manager
New Star Manager is a lighter take on the Football Manager experience. Influencing the key attacking moments yourself is a neat touch, but it’s not deep enough to offer a sizeable challenge to its more well-known contemporaries.
The follow-up to New Star Soccer is better on Switch, but it's £15 more expensive.
New Star Soccer presently surprised me and it got me hooked from the first minute of switching it on. The gameplay loop is satisfying and scoring goals feels great. It’s just a shame then, that I found a nailed on way of scoring every time, which eventually caused the game to become too easy and samey. If Football Manager interests you, but you would rather have a little more input during the matches, then this might just be the game for you. An unexpectedly good and different take on a football management sim.

Very addicting, one of my favourite games. Only reason it's not a 10 is because it's slightly broken in a few areas. For example, the game keeps telling me I can't sign a player because the transfer window is shut, but the player I'm trying to sign was a free agent my scout found! Other than that, great game .

Very addictive game with a lot of cool mechanics. It's a bit too easy though, which really retracts from the overall experience (I've been promoted in four straight seasons, en route to win the Premier League in my fifth season). There's also a weird mechanic where you won't get much spectators in your stadium unless you have lots of highly rated star players in your team. So despite you leading the league and scoring goals for fun, you'll have like 1600 people at your matches in the Championship - which of course is just silly. But! Get it on sale, it's a really fun experience for quite a few hours, well worth it overall.

It's not at its absolute best on Switch, but New Star Manager still provides the deeply tactile Yang to Football Manager 2019 Touch's stat-heavy Ying. It plays a more intuitive and portable game of tactical footy than its illustrious rival, and it also packs a lot more depth than its basic presentation might suggest.

So with New Star Manager you get poor on-field football action, and poor off-field management. Throw in the cheap "typical mobile game" aesthetics and design, and it's hard to understand who would want to play this. People who simply like football would go for FIFA. People who want a management simulator would go for the densely rewarding Football Manager. Both of which are already available on Switch.
