Grim Dawn

CD-Action
Dozens of hours of hacking and slashing done so well and so addictive that you could swear it’s Blizzard’s game. [05/2016, p.56]
Truly, Grim Dawn represents the modern gamer's slot machine, where three cherries are a set item drop and three 7's are a jackpot of a story that never comes to fruition.

Grim Dawn scratches the right action RPG itch with a plenty of loot to hoard and a decent skill system that offers plenty of options to build the perfect demon-blasting hero. The only problem is the lack of a proper endgame, as the non-randomized maps and locations becoming too familiar too fast. [May 2016]

Game is mostly pretty good. 1) poor map system. Having to be on top of the dungeon for the map location to be shown is not good. Not being able to leave map markers is also another bad design. 2) some monsters are incredibly unbalanced. After finishing the campaign and beating the end boss reasonably easily (1 death) on normal difficulty, I returned to normal difficulty to do bounties in Homestead to boost my reputation with that faction. I ended up getting a beserker dangerous den elite who is basically unkillable for my character. Not being able to cancel the bounty means bounties for that faction are effectively locked unless I go to a harder difficulty, which my character isn't ready for. I was having zero problems with other mobs and farming prior to said overpowered elite. Basically 1 shots me with near 8k health and his health steal sees him go from half health to full health after 1 successful hit on my character. That's OP AF. 3) the fandom is well, the worst type of Apple fanboy. Unhelpful, rude and condescending. HARD PASS. It's not a way to welcome new players to the game. One of the worst fandoms I've experienced, if not the worst, in my online experiences since the late 90s. The game itself gets an 8, but it loses 2 points for the poor fandom. Tools such as grimtools aren't particularly good either. d3planner puts it to shame. For those who are yet to try the game, don't expect a legendary item to drop until you are either clvl 50 or very close. 99% of drops are fillers and good drops very far between. Vendors in game are hard locked behind reputation, so mostly unhelpful to character advancement. It's a real shame, the game has a lot of potential. It's what I'd call a mixture of D2R and PoE. The story is OK. Visuals and music/sound are both excellent.

Gets extremely repetitive after a while, I think it's a well made game, but frankly it just goes on and on and on... on the other hand I also didn't like the lack of conveyance to the player as to where I needed to go. Most of the objectives are not marked in the map, you have to open the quest menu in order to get an idea as to where to go, which begs the question, Why not just have a waypoint after all? It's a strange game, it has some really good things, and some really bad things. Straight to the middle.

There is no question that Grim Dawn moves along familiar lines: Base classes, a tragic world inhabited by monsters in a wide variety of flavors, nearly constant loot drops, action-oriented combat, somewhat "lite" yet interesting story, etc. Somehow, though, Grim Dawn just does it better than any other ARPG in recent memory.

Grim Dawn is one of the best action-RPGs out there, combining excellent hack and slash action with a world and progression curve that makes it worth fighting through. Alone or with friends, it’s hour after hour of top quality combat and looting, with the promise of many more excellent dark times to come.

Grim Dawn doesn't change the rules but builds upon them to deliver a solid, engaging and lasting experience.

Grim Dawn can be like pulling the lever on a slot machine, the only difference being that the reward here isn’t cash but the gory explosion of beasts and the clink of loot-drops. I know from personal experience that this game has that certain something, and even if you think that you've grown tired of games of its ilk, Grim Dawn has enough tricks up its sleeve to charm even the most grizzled veteran.

The world design is imaginative and visually impressive, there is a strong narrative if you wish to learn about it and the gameplay feels fun and addictive.

Tons of loot, neat character customization, a huge game world and plenty of monsters to kill - if that's your thing and you enjoy playing offline, you can't go wrong with Grim Dawn. Just don't expect a polished online experience or deep storyline - there's plenty of other games for that.

All in all, despite quite a lot of bugs and flaws, Grim Dawn is definitely a must-play if you are into Diablo or other similar action role-playing games like Divinity: Original Sin. The game is still pretty recent, and I have faith that the developers are working hard to fix the flaws and make this title even better.

GrimDawn is an exceptional game and the best of its kind as it surpasses Diablo 4 and Path of Exile in one way or another. Tons of content, tons of customization, really unique builds for your character. Beautiful graphics and sound, incredible boss fights etc. You start from humble beginnings and you ascent to absolute Godhood, combining different elemental powers that give you endless power. Best of the best, Grim Dawn is a classic for top down action games, just don't sleep on this one.

Grim dawn is truly a fantastic arpg with a dev team that pays attention to their fans. Customization and story are great and there is plenty of loot to keep you busy. My main issue with the game which is why the score is lower then what is should be is the combat feels to clunky and slow for me. I do not feel any impact when attacking or using my skills and there are some pointless difficulty spikes through campaign that occasionally would make me stop playing for a while. Definitely recommend if you do not mind a slower arpg experience.

For the most part this is a very good ARPG that plays like Titan Quest in a grimdark setting. The gameplay of this series feels a bit different from Diablo. It's more fast-paced, mowing through packs of monsters. And that is my main complaint. Although there is a wide variety of enemies, fighting them all feels the same. The combat is messy, and killing monsters is vaguely unsatisfying. After a while, it's the exact same routine with every group of enemies for dozens of hours, with no real feeling of excitement or engagement.

Feels very repetitive. You just spam spells on mobs of monsters. Quit the game after 5 hours in.
