Gothic
With a novel, large and intricate set of societies, coupled with excellent graphics and sound, Gothic becomes one of the most immersive and believable single-play adventure/RPGs ever.
The 3D engine looks unbelievably good! The surroundings are impeccable, and bear a surreal and depressive atmosphere. All the objects and buildings look just as great.

Decent graphics and a well-developed storyline. It also has a great amount of replayability, as each time through the game could yield different experiences with different choices.

A flawed masterpiece that was well ahead of its time in many ways but unfortunately with some jank and unfinished areas

The environment, the quests, and the huge world you're in overcomes some of the technical issues with the game.

There are some deficiencies in this game – most notably, how to equip a weapon without jumping through all the hoops the game has to offer.

It was originally conceived for the keyboard only, and though you can reconfigure its commands, the game isn't very mouse friendly. [Mar 2002, p.61]

If you can get past the absurd control hurdle and the fact that the beginning is the best part of the game..., Gothic is a satisfying RPG to fiddle with. [Apr 2002, p.92]

The game immerses you in the atmosphere of a realistic fairy tale that is simply magical, which is why I love Gothic 1

I had a deuce of a time getting this game to even run at all without crashing every 5 minutes. The mod manager/launcher Spine seems to run the game better than Steam natively. In a pinch, even OpenGothic support for Gothic 1 is much better than the native exes. So, now that I can play the game properly, what did I think of it? Well, it's a charming yet middling game with a very bloated map. Once you get the hang of combat and leveling up, the game quickly overcomes its learning curve. There are still a few surprises to be had, though, which are nice touches. I wish fast travel were available sooner instead of running back and forth across the map for early objectives so much. It's one of those games I wish I had used the developer mode earlier to pick a couple of locations and make my own fast travel between them to save some time and tedium. Still, it's better than the awful, broken experience I've had with Gothic for the last 15 years I've owned it and never seen what was so special about it.

Gothic - An epic stuck in a bad game Don't get me wrong, I love the world building, characters you interact, premise, atmosphere, graphics looks amazing for it's time... but as a game it kinda stinks even though I enjoyed the game with over 50 hours on Steam with some mods on to patch out the bugs. Pros: - writing - characters - world (albeit a bit empty between camps) - graphics ( I'm a **** for old graphics) - story ( Ending was meh imo) Cons: - the combat ( pretty frustrating and outdated ) - the basic controls (holstering weapons ****, interact button is questionable) - inventory system - mobility and traversal - buggy Those are my thoughts on it, I still like it for the experience and now I'm currently playing thru Gothic 2.

This game gets good reviews only because of nostalgia. I wouldn't call this game a total failure, but it's basically unplayable if you haven't played it as a kid. The reason for this are the controls. Guess what... I love old games. I haven't played Gothic when it came out, I haven't played it when I was a kid. I played it as an adult and I can forgive a lot when it comes to the old games, but giving us a buggy cringefest with controls that cannot be changed is a joke. I've finished the game, pushed through it and it wasn't that much fun really. The story was fine, atmosphere was nice, graphics are fine, sound is fine, but these damn controls. You can get used to them but they're terrible. For this I cannot recommend this game. Let this one be forgotten. Pickens condemns.

Will start off by saying I've only played just over 3 hours of the game, but the game doesn't inspire me to continue any further. Although the premise and the setting are very nice and you can get the atmospheric feel of the place, especially with good ambient music, the game has a lot of drawbacks, such as ridiculously bad controls, poor dialogue, and a very slow pace. First of all, the controls. To do anything in the game, such as to pick up an item, to talk to someone, or (the worst of all) to climb ladders, requires not only for the character to be perfectly alligned in a certain direction, but also the press of two buttons at exactly the same time. This kind of bad controls really detract from the gaming experience, even if you do sort of get there after an hour or so. I also mentioned the bad dialogue, but that mostly just refers to the main character and not the NPCs. It's a combination of both the bad lines and bad voice acting. Like the guy has an overly down to earth attitude and acts a bit like a naive child even though he has no reason to since just about any character there tries to beat the crap out of him or to rob him off his ore. However, it's mostly the slow pacing of the game that really discouraged me from carrying on, and the fact that you are kind of forced to explore for solutions to what to do next, except that the game won't let you explore, because nearly every creature apart from standard scavengers kills you in one hit, hence confining you to a tiny area. The game probably picks up the pace later on, but I couldn't stomach it anymore. If these issues could be sorted out, I am sure Gothic can be a really fun game, but otherwise it feels a bit broken, especially considering there are some in-game bugs present too, which I sort of forgave.
